Hooray, I Clepped Sociology Yesterday!

That is the GREATEST thing, to clep classes. So far I've done Human Growth and Dev, and Sociology in the past six weeks. It saved me several hundred dollars and a LOT of time sitting in class and driving back and forth. I picked up 6 credits so easily.

If you have prereq's like these to complete, and you do well learning on your own with study materials, you should check into whether your program allows clep exams, and where you can take them. The best part for me, is this Sociology class is worth an extra point on my nursing application, which is due now. I feel pretty comfortable I'll make it into the January cut with just that one extra point I didn't expect to have it just two weeks ago. VERY, very excited!

YAY! Congrats! :D

Congrats! That's great!

Can I ask you how much prep time you put into Human Growth & Dev.? I'll be clepping that one pretty soon.

Alright! More Points and just under the wire!. Never thought of clepping sociology. Congrats

Clepping is testing out so you get the credit but do not have to take the class. Awesome!

Congrats, Wendy!

I clepped Intro Psych and English Comp in August, and I'm planning on Human G&D in January. Any hints on what areas to concentrate on there?

Bigmona--

The CLEP is a series of tests from the College Board (the SAT people) you can take at many institutions. If you pass, it gives you credit for the courses--so you can avoid taking them. Courses like College Writing, Intro Psych, Biology--a number of the courses that may be required for your nursing program. Here's a link to the College Board site:

http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

You can find a listing there of which courses you can clep as well as the test sites. Obviously, you have to prepare to take the clep, and you have to make sure your institution accepts the clep in lieu of the course--it's usually in the college catalog if they do. When I clepped Psychology, I got an intro Psych book out of the library and spent a couple of weeks reading it. College Board also makes study guides for the different cleps that you can get at their website.

Best of luck!

Hi again, everybody,

It looks like the question has been answered about what Clep Exams are, so let me talk to the folks interested in HG&D! Between the two tests I took this one presented the most challenge. I studied from the book called "The Best Preparation for the College-Level Examination Human Growth and Development". I must say, although I studied this book carefully, did all the practice tests, and lightly skimmed a text book there were many questions I had no clue how to answer. Right until the end of the test I wasn't sure I even passed, but as it turned out I aced it. OK, you must know the major theorists very well, along with their approaches (Piaget, Maslow, Freud, Skinner, etc.)(Some of these guys were wacko IMHO). I made notecards, and carried them with me everywhere for the better part of the summer, studying between classes, and after 'regular' studying. I'd say I worked a good 6-weeks in preparing. Anyhow, the only actual question I remember is "What is the only way to accurately diagnose Alzheimers", and I had no idea. One answer was autopsy, so I picked that one. :chuckle Also, I think the definition of complete homeostasis is 'death'. (Yikes...I remembered the morbid ones.) At the end of the test you have the option of 'aborting' the test, or reporting your score. I was terrified, but I picked 'report the score', and I passed. Whew. Sociology was easier for me, but there was a lot of overlap from the HG&D, so anybody who needs to do both should do them back-to-back. Go take your clep exams everybody! It costs about $65.00 + study materials, but the time saved sitting in boring classes makes it worth far more.

See you in NURSING ORIENTATION IN JAN. KATHY!!! I just KNOW I'll make it in....nobody wants it more than I. I know you're getting in, because you're cerebral, Miss "Scored in the 90's" On the NLN. :p

At my school Clepping shows up on a transcript the same as any other class, credits included, except it does not contribute either way to your GPA. So, if you fail it does not bring your GPA down. You have to wait 6 months to re-test in the same subject. Do you know why a lot of students don't know about Clep exams? Because the schools play it down (shhhhh). Why should they shout it out to you, since they make their money when you sit those classes and pay $$$ for tuition.

Thanks for the info on HG&D, Wendy. Good luck in finding out about school!

thank you everyone who replied to my questions! i can see why i've never heard of this- it's so much cheaper to go this route.
