Honest Answer Needed: How Tough Is It?

Hi all! This is my first post on this site (although I have been lurking for a while). Anyways, I just wanted to know how tough is it to get into Nursing? I have always wanted to be an RN and now is a great time for me to achieve this goal. I am in 25 and have been out of school for 7 years. As of this coming Monday I am starting university preparation courses. My transcript isn't the best, so I am hoping these courses will give me an edge in the application process. I hope to be starting my degree in September 2007. Is this feasible? Are there long wait-lists in Ontario? My husband and are are not opposed to moving to another part of the province or to another province all together. His job is very transferable so he won't have trouble finding a job wherever we end up.

So I guess what I am really trying to find out is it a waste of my time to apply in Ontario? Is there any other province that has less wait-times for acceptance? I sometimes feel like I have left this too long and that all of the recent grads from highschool will be given consideration before me.

My first choice for colleges would be Durham, George Brown, and Algonquin. Does anyone know about the nursing programs at these colleges?

Sorry for all of the questions! I guess I am pretty excited about this.

"my first choice for colleges would be durham, george brown, and algonquin. does anyone know about the nursing programs at these colleges?"--> dunno about these places but any "accredited" nursing school should properly prepare you for your canadian boards.

"sorry for all of the questions! i guess i am pretty excited about this."--> go for it!

I went to school in Sask about 10 years ago. There were approx 1000 applicants for 60 seats. Just an FYI. Good luck!

I applied to enter nursing school this year and was accepted into Western's compressed program. I know that Western and many other schools extended their application deadlines indefinitly so I assume that means the classes are not full so as long as you can meet the entrance requirements you should have no problem getting into a nursing program in Ontario!

Im currently in university for and there are over 1000 applicants for 120 spots. And this year applications for the compressed time frame has been EXTREMLEY competative. I believe there was 400 applicants for 50 spots. The academic advisor was telling this to me.

I had no trouble getting into nursing school where I am in Cornwall. This is the first time that they have had a degree programme here. We are 18 people in a class that can take 50, but of course this year was the first year for this programme. I think in the following years there will be more competition, but lucky for me it was quite easy to get in.

I lived in Ottawa and I also applied at algonquin, but they did not even respond to my application, neither did Ottawa U, the only one who answered was SLC.

Thank you for all of your responses! I know it is going to be tough, but hopefully it will be worth it.

Bicycleboy, I am so surprised that you didn't hear back from these schools. I will definetly keep that in mind when I am applying to the program.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if the admission process at Queen's univ and Unv. of ottawa are competitive.what gpa do they usually accept into their program?Any clue?thanks!
