home health pay

Published

I was recently laid off my med/surg job at a small town hospital that is practically bankrupt (no love lost!) . I'm sick of working the hospital after 10 years and have been looking into home health. Today, I was offered a job in home health immediately following the initial interview..... before I ever left the office (evidence of desperation?).

He offered the job (and seemed to forget all about the pay issue) until as an afterthought; he threw in that he would pay me hourly at the same rate as my last position. Also said case manager pay is salaried. He said that after 3 months he would reeval my pay, and that RNs make more $$ in home health than in the hospital. Is that possible? I had always heard home health paid less.

What are you home health RNs paid out there? Btw, I'm in Texas, what should I expect? Thanks for your input!

First of all, I would take no job if I did not know the pay up front... how can they say they will tell you in three months? You have to be paid weekly or every two weeks.. not like he will pay you all at once in three months.. Hard to say what Texas salaries or pay is as it varies from state to state. Here in Florida we are paid by the visit. anywhere from $25/00 to $30.00 a visit. Milage is usually not reimbursed in most agencies. A visit could be any where from a half hour to two hours depending on what you may find when you get there.

Home health is a lot of fun and a great career change from the hospital. but be sure you know the pay before beginning any new job. (just my opinion for what it is worth)

Good Luck to you!!

If RN's make more in home health, why is this guy, who seems to be all fired up to hire you, only offering what you made at your last position?

Seems a little weird.

Also, he could re-eval your pay in three months and not do anything with it....

I'd ask for more specifics, and I'd ask for them in writing.

He sounds like a guy that hired me PDQ (essentially over the phone) and turned out to be very disorganized, inconsistent and--dare I say it?--none too bright.

Good luck!

Some hh nurses make more than nurses in hospital, some less. The nurses that make more are usually paid per visit. I am with my second hh agency and each works a little bit differently. HH is not for everyone. I think you need to try it for a while and see what you think. Some nurses would rather be paid hourly as opposed to per visit. I personally prefer being paid per visit. I don't work full time so the days I do work I really push myself. I would not be able to keep up that pace 5 days a week though. The thing that's nice about hourly is that if a patient is not home, you still get paid for your time. With per visit you get nothing (except the mileage) At both agencies I did receive pay for miles. I though most did that but I may be wrong. You need to find out about the mileage though too since you will rack the miles on. There can be big differences there too. I am getting 10 cents more a mile with this job than with my last- it adds up over time. I think the director probably meant that in 3 months they would re-evaluate your pay and see if you should go to salary. The field nurses I have known who have been salary have overall not been as happy with their pay. I think that if you have no experience in hh then 3 months to re-eval pay is too soon. You will still be learning and your productivity won't be up in that period of time.

I agree with you 100%. I would rather be per visit though. Salary stinks I think.

It's going rather well, I actually almost like being a nurse now that I'm working in hh. (I've never said that before, in fact, I think I hated nursing from day one in the hospital.....I just can't deal with that feeling of being abused by greedy SOBs).

I like being on the road, and the whole atmosphere is better!
