Home Health Interview. Your opinions please.

Published

I have 11 years of med/surg experience. With all of the changes going on in the hospitals these days & burnout I am finally ready to do something different. I finally landed an interview with a home health agency for part time work. There are no benefits for working under 30 hours/week & they stated since they are non profit they could not come close to matching my current wage (I currently make 32.00/hour). The most they could pay me would be around 25.00/hour.

A co-worker told me usually home health nurses make more than hospital nurses, now I'm not so sure. I was really interested in the job, but I'm not sure if they're trying to get me to work for a lower wage. I'm looking for some input from those who know the ropes! Thanks

I also am a med surg nurse. I cut my hours at the hosp from 40 to 32 and now work per diem in HH. I wanted to make sure I liked HH. I do like it but it does not have the stability the hosp has. I suggest u work per diem in HH before u fully comit to them to to be sure you like it. There is a lot to learn bc it is a little different than med surg. Good luck.

I feel my job is very stable. If you are working per diem, you don't have a guaranteed salary just like you wouldn't as a per diem nurse in the hospital. Hospitals' censuses can drop too and hospital nurses get canceled from their shifts all the time. And, yes, I make more money now than I did in the hospital. That's not true of all agencies, though. Most people I know who left the hospital took a pay cut to work home health. It's a trade off.
