Hello, it's tax season. I work in home care as a second job. I was wondering on whether or not I should give a mileage log to my accountant. I don't work in an office, and I travel to client homes every work day. It has totaled to be about 1800 miles.
I always keep track on the mileage I make from home to client homes. Do you guys do the same? My other job is a CNA on a facility and I keep track of that too.

I can tell you what I was told by my accountant...that you can only use miles BETWEEN clients. The milage from home to 1st client of the day doesn't qualify. Milage from your last client to home also doesn't count....but every mile from one client to the next as well as any errands/appts for clients or from a clients home to office count.
I don't know how much milage (if any) your agency does pay you. If they do pay you milage you may not be able to claim it on your return...unless, say your agency pays 20cents per mile and the going rate for your state is...32cents...then I'd say that is something you should ask your accountant about.

Mileage from home to either job is not deductible. It's an expected expense. Mileage from client A to client B is deductible less any payment for mileage from your agency. Mileage from job 1 to job 2 within a certain time period may be deductible. (I worked job one and had to be at my shift at job 2 in less than 30 minutes. Mileage home to job 1 not deductible, mileage job 1 to job 2 deductible, mileage job 2 to home Not deductible. If it was more than an hour between job start times the mileage was not deductible.
