Recently, there has been a change in holiday pay policy where I work. Instead of being paid for the actual holiday worked, only staff working on the observed holiday will be paid at a holiday rate. It's become an issue this year because the July 4th holiday falls on a Sunday, but is federally recognized on the 5th.

What are your thoughts? Should nurses be paid for working the actual holiday since hospitals are open 24/7, or should they be paid for the observed holiday?

OUr holiday pay started today at midnight 7/4 0001 until midnight at 7/5. So you have to work both the 3rd and 4th to get the full 12 hr. holiday pay. At least we get holiday pay:D.

ours works tonight. I think it's just time and a 1/2 but at least that's something :)

:) I thought I and my fellow nurses were the only ones to work holidays for straight time. I wouldn't care which way it was done as long as holiday pay was offered.

I barely get paid at all, much less holiday pay! I'm a CNA working in an ALF and I don't even get minimum wage! But, its convenient for my nursing school schedule.

We don't get holiday pay per se. We get 8 hours put into our PTO bank (even though we work 12 hour shifts). We then have 30 days to use those 8 hours either as extra pay or pto. Of course for the time off you have to pony up 4 additional hours from your account. If you don't use it in 30 days it disappears. Such is life in small, county hospitals.

I thought if you worked you get paid for any holiday pay. I didnt know a person work status matter. I work prn also and get holiday pay if I decide to work. This dont sound fair. I guess each facility is different. If that is the case I wouldnt work holidays.

Some prn positions do have have some weekend and holiday requirements. I work prn in a central resource pool. I am required to work one weekend a month. One group a holiday such as memorial day, fourth of july, labor day, or thanksgiving. Second group such as Christmas or New Years Day. Third group one hard to fill day such as Easter, Mothers Day, Valentines Day, Halloween, or Day after Thanksgiving. I choose one out of each group. It pretty easy and simple. I really enjoy this prn pool.

Nope, don't get holiday pay. I didn't call in after all but I should have. We only had 10 patients on the floor and pretty much had nothing to do. We are required to work one weekend a month too to keep your "active" status and required to work 2 of the holidays but I seem to always land on all the holidays. It's okay though, I won't be there much longer.
