If my family were worried, I'd cite the figures to calm them.

I've been a dialysis nurse for 13 years. Tuesday I was stuck by a 14 gauge needle from an HIV pt. The arterial needle came up thru the pt's skin and punctured my left thumb. We followed protocol, went to ER and started all the meds. Pt is neg for HEPB and HEPC but we have known for years that the pt is HIV+. My initial tests results were of course neg but I have to be retested in 3 mths, 6 mths, and a year. I'm going out of my mind with worry. Just wondering if any of you had experienced anything similar or if you know anyone that actually has acquired HIV from this type of accident. I know the information says the risk is low, but all I can think of the fresh blood, large hollow bore needle, BIG stick. I don't want to risk giving anything to my husband so our whole family is pretty much going crazy with fear.
