I recently interviewed for a med/surg position. I felt the interview went well, rec'd info on benefits, salary, holidays etc. I stated my desire to take the position. I also sent an after the interview thank you letter. It has been 12 days since the interview and I have not heard a word. I am curious, do hospitals HR dept. usually send letters of denial? What is the normal procedure that you have experienced? How long did it take to get hired or denied the position you interviewed for? Do they just leave you hanging? Waiting........

They may leave you hanging, but usually there is a rejection letter. In your position, at 2 weeks, I would contact them just to "stay in touch" and ask them whether or not they had made any decisions about the position your interviewed for. They may be simply waiting for reference requests to come in on those applicants who are being seriously considered -- but you won't know until you ask.

If you are not selected for the job, you should receive a denial letter. I hate those!
But, I would not wait too long before following up on the interview. 12 days is sufficient time for you to inquire as to the status of your application.
Based on my experience which I previously posted, you must be very persistent. Let them know you want the job bad enough to keep checking on the status. They will see that you really want the job and are diligent enough to follow up.
Remember, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". :chuckle
Good luck.

I was told a decision would be made for one job I had interviewed for within two weeks. I called my HR contact after three weeks and was told they were "hoping" to have a decision in the next week or so!! I did finally hear the following week, but all this wait time put me behind for other jobs and made me nuts.
I agree it can't hurt to put in a call or an e-mail to your HR contact.

I used to be a manager and was responsible for hiring. (outside the medical field). From experience being on the other side of the desk....during the interview ask when they will expect to make their decision, also ask THEM when would be appropriate for you to follow up. If they say "friday", make sure you call on friday. If on friday they don't have answer, again ask them when they would like you to follow up. When it came down to a "tie" I would always hire the person that listened to my direction and did what they said they would.
I agree with pharmgirl. Always ask about the timetable during an interview. It lets you know what to expect and when to follow up.

Well, the hiring process can be VERY frustrating!! I interviewed the middle of May for a surgery position. The Director didn't tell me I was hired and I didn't hear anything for a couple of weeks. A friend in my class interviewed the week after me and he told her the surgery position had been filled internally but he was interested in her for PACU. Well, I decided to call the recruiter and tell him that I heard the surgery position was filled but that I would be interested in Pre-op or PACU if something was available. He said they were just processing my paperwork before they could make me the official offer. I was like, "offer for what position?" He said it was surgery, it seems there was more than one position, but no one ever called me to even tell me they wanted to hire me!! Then, I just got the call from HR today after days of calling to check on the status of my paperwork. I go tomorrow for all the testing and stuff. I so agree with being a "squeeky wheel"...LOL!! I'm just glad I decided to check back with them or I would have applied elsewhere, and this was the place I wanted to be anyway, glad it worked out!
As I stated in my origianl post, I interviewed and sent thank you letter expressing my interest in position. I called two times and left a voice mail for recruiter. Nothing. On Friday, she called me stated she had been very busy and was sorry for not getting back to me. She said she had several positions and she would pass my info to the person hiring on this med surg unit. Received a call today, but was not home. This looks good. See, it does pay to follow up and show your interest position. Even though this process started over three weeks, things are progressing. We'll see what tomorrow brings!
This is good news for me because in the NJ,PA and DE area, GN positions are hard to find. Was getting very discouraged.
