HIPAA violation, termination and new employment

Published

Hi

I just wanted to know if anybody knows whether it is difficult to get hired as an RN after being terminated for HIPAA violation reasons?

Thanks

Sounds to me like someone is being unreasonable. You should have been warned and verbally reprimanded at most. However, they saw it as an opportunity to get rid of you. Maybe you are better off.

Many people in nursing get fired and go on to have successful careers. This is not a career-ending event. I suggest that you practice (in the mirror at home, and "live" with friends and family) answering the questions you know you're going to get in interviews about this situation, and practice until you're relaxed and comfortable talking openly about it (don't wait until you're in an interview and just wait to see what pops into your head at that moment! :uhoh3:). You need to be able to talk about the experience without sounding defensive, blaming others, or bad-mouthing your former employer. You need to be able to take responsibility for your own actions, identify what went wrong, and discuss what changes you've made or actions you've taken to make sure that the situation won't happen again in the future. Lying or just trying to cover up or avoid parts of your past employment history will make the situation much worse for you than the original incident will. Best wishes!

How long were you there? Was your offense reported to the BON?
