Hello,
I plan to attend to HCC's 2013 fall evening nursing program (applying in Jan). I am curious to see what people people's GPA is going in. I hear spring's is lower than fall's.
Thanks!
The alternates probably receive their acceptance letters in waves. This may have been the first wave of letters going out. They probably continue mailing letters out as space permits. I wouldn't necessarily worry until the day of orientation and still not having heard anything. In previous threads, it was stated that all alternates eventually got accepted and some even received their letters until the day before orientation. If that's the case, they would have to allow special circumstances on the background checks since it supposedly can take up to 10 days....Keep your heads up guys! Your chances will come!

I seriously doubt GPA is the only factor in which they base their decision. If so, there wouldn't be a need to "review" applications for two plus months. It would be easy for a computer generated report to list people in order of gpa. Also, with the strict diversity laws, there has to be other factors that decide who they accept. Examples including the typical sex, gender, race, etc....i've read things online that describe other schools selection processes and some listed that being a male in a predominantly female profession would give the male applicant a +1....also, if you read back in this thread there was someone whose friend was accepted with I think a 3.2 gpa while there own GPA was much higher than that. I'm a male, have a lower gpa than some of the people that are still waiting, yet have gotten my acceptance letter. I'm just offering my thoughts to those that are still waiting. Up until Saturday, I was in the same position...

Never thought of that...you may be onto something there. I have been wondering why some lower gpa's were getting acceptance letters, while others were still waiting.

"HCCs Nursing program is highly competitive. GPA in prerequisite courses is the basis of admissions; the class admitted for Fall 2012 had a minimum prerequisite GPA over 3.5."
That suggests to me that it is strictly based on gpa. Also, I have gotten as much from advisors. Maybe this makes me sound like a bit of a brat (and if so, I am sorry), but I have worked my ass off for 3 years (yes, 3!) so that when I graduate this program I will be debt free. I have paid for courses strictly out of pocket while working 60+ hours a week at some points to save so that I need to work minimally during the actual program. I am frustrated with myself that a poor attitude 10 years ago is what has kept me from my 4.0
I just feel that if you're going to advertise it being based on gpa and then leave some people hanging while others with lower gpas get in is in poor form. As I said this is straight from many advisors mouths - perhaps they need to be better informed or just keep quiet about things in which they obviously know nothing.
It is based on pre-req GPA, followed by overall GPA to break a tie. It is unlikely that people with lower GPAs are getting in. If there were other sorting factors they would be legally bound to mention it in the catalog. The only thing I read that gave priority spots was retrackers and linkage students. Personally, I wouldn't believe the majority of the GPA numbers thrown around on this site, because many people miscalculate their true pre-req GPA. They forget to take credit hours per class, withdrawal penalties, and re-take penalties into account, while others mistakenly think that a higher ENC-2 grade can replace ENC-1.

What are retrackers and linkage students? People already in the medical field, or people repeating semesters? ...just curious. You make good points. I hope all the alternates make it in...we have all gone down the same very difficult path to get to this point.

I haven't a clue :) I just read in the catalog somewhere that spots may be reserved for them. To me, it would make more sense to add in points based on interviews and medical experience, instead of GPA alone.

^ this makes sense.
I do remember reading somewhere that female students, if they end up pregnant, can withdraw during a semester (for delivery and such) and can continue from the same point the following semester.
Again, if I seem like a brat, I really am sorry. I don't deal well with all this up in the air business.
