I am curious to hear what things you really like and dislike about working hospice?

I work on an inpatient hospice unit. I enjoys seeing my patient's symptoms resolve with my intervention. I feel rewarded when the family feels relief because they brought their loved one in and we can relieve some of the caregiver stress. I like to sit and talk with families. Patients that are my own age bother me sometimes.

I like-
The fact that you really get to know your pts and family (depending on their prognosis)
Being able to support families and pts at EOL
The flexibility
Being able to feel like you successfully helped a pt pass with dignity and comfort
Dislikes-
extreme caseload
impossible facilities
meetings about meetings about meetings
I am trying to weigh the pros and cons of working on hospice and oncology unit.

Not working acute care in large hospitals anymore is why I enjoy hospice work. Doing evals in hospitals, caring for pt's in facilities, and doing admits, especially in facilities are tasks that make me wish I could retire from nursing.

Love the patient care, the travel to private homes, getting to know people.
Hate the computer electronic medical record system. Hate is accurate.

I love actually building relationships with patients and family and knowing that I make a real difference to their life and experience.
I sometimes grow weary of the cumulative grief that is present in hospice. I find going to funerals helps me to find closure and allows my grief to be alleviated.
