High School Student With Questions

Published

Hi,

I'm a high school junior, and I'm interested in going into the medical field. There's a bit of a problem though...I'm interested in 3 things. Being a nurse, being a general practitioner, and doing research. I can't really tell you which of those I want the most because they all sound good to me. Nursing and research are my top two though. So, I have some questions:

1. Obviously, next year I'm going to have to apply for college, so I'm going to have to decide whether or not I want to go into nursing before then because it will affect where I apply. Anything I can do to help make that decision?

2. If I do decide that I want to go into nursing, should I take the nursing program at the local tech school next year? It's a half day program during the school week that prepares you to be a CNA, and from that you have the option of automatically getting into the nursing program at the local community college.

3. What type of degree should I go for, Associates or Bachelors, or both? I've been thinking that it would make sense to do the Associates, work some, and then decide whether or not I wanted to continue my education and get a Bachelors. Opinions?

4. Related to #3, if I'm just going got an Associates, how much of a difference, if any, would it make in terms of my career if I went to a 2 year community college rather than a 4 year college that offered the same degree?

That's all I've got for now.

Thanks in advance!

medicine and nursing are two different fields.....good luck

Um, I always thought that nursing was a part of the medical field...?

Huh.

That's different than everything I've ever been told before. I've always thought of doctors, nurses, surgeons and the like all to be in the medical field.

It might be a matter of semantics. But we like to consider Nursing a field and science in and of itself separate from medicine. We don't go to med school, we are not taught by doctors, but nurses, we make our own care plans, interventions and protocols on how to treat nursing problems.

Obviously we work very closely with medicine. But get yourself in the mindset that we are a distinct profession separate from medicine. But we're unique in that we are probably the only profession in the "medical field" that works closely with all the other professions like pharmacy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, pyschiatry, social work, on and on. We're awesome that way!

I know that nursing is a very different profession, but as I said, everything that I've ever been told and read says that it's in the medical field.

The PLAN test puts it all together. Health Care and Medical Diagnosis and Treatment both include nursing under careers. although the positions are different (Health Care has LPN, RN, and Nursing/psychiatric aid, and Medical Diagnosis and Treatment has CRNA, NP and Nurse-midwife).

Good enough. It is in the medical field, and if you take tests that say you'd be good in the medical field, you should definately consider nursing.

We prefer to refer to it as the "nursing profession" rather than the medical field. Again, it's all words, and not important to you at this point, and if you choose nursing, you'll understand what we're saying soon enough.
