high school senior in need of advice

Published

Hey allnurses.com users.

As many my age I am in need of MUCH info. I haven chosen to attend. A community college in orlando fl to help prevent putting my parents in a worse economic situation than we already are in. I want to become a nurses, and I want to spend the least amount of time in school. Do any of you reccomend that I obtain my AA degree then transfer to a nursing program, such as the one at UCf or UF, or should I just complete the required gen ed pre-reqs and then go to an AS nursing program at a community college?

Sorry its so much to read.

Look into the prerequisite requirements for all of the programs that are nearby or that you might otherwise consider and plan your school program to meet the majority of them. Then, when the time comes, apply to all of the programs, and make your choice from the programs that offer you a seat. That is what most people do.

I'm not sure I follow the AA then transfer to nursing thing, but it may just be the way it's done where you live. I know where I am you can just major in nursing at a community college and you will graduate with your ASN and can take the NCLEX to become an RN. Then if you want to later on and while you working you can go and get your BSN if it's something you want. I have a BSN but did my prereqs at community college. It's much cheaper! and the classes are smaller and I think I got a better education in the basics at junior college than I would have at a big 4 yr university where there are like 200 people in those basic classes. Just my opinion. Good luck in your college studies!

Right out of high school at age 17 I started my prereqs and I also completed my CNA. Now I'm in the nursing program at CC and I'll be a nurse at 20. I do plan to transfer to a university to complete my BSN degree. I was very fortunate because at my CC they had a program where they took in high school grads that wanted to become nurses and they paid for all of my prereqs, books, cna class, uniforms, I also had a seat in the nursing program 2 years before I even started my prereqs... Such a blessing ! I also didn't have to hold or put a deposit down on my seat in nursing school. Check out financial aid and see what your school has to offer for high school grads. Good luck

You are very mature and smart for your age. I know for a fact that most CC hold seats maybe 2 or 3 for highschool scholars wanting to be nurses. You must make good grades while doing your prequisites and they pretty much let you into the program. So I think you should go to CC and take the prerequisites for the associates degree nursing and once you finish get your AS in nursing your can take the rest of the classes at your own pace to ultimately complete your BSN. Good Luck to you! Sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. Your parents should be proud!

Some of the ADN programs have such a long waiting list that you end up getting done faster if you just go right to the BSN program. I like the idea of going to a community college to get your pre-requisites done and getting your AA degree at the same time (once you have it they can't take it away). The classes at CC are smaller and cheaper.

Wisconsin has 2 year state community colleges that have a "guaranteed transfer program" to go on to the 4 year college and get your BSN. Good luck and keep all nurses on your favorites list.

I will offer my 2 cents..... I would say go for CNA, find a facility that will help you get your LPN, work as an LPN and (hopefully they will help you) earn your RN..... each one is a stepping stone for the next, and if you can get your employer to help.... that's even better.
