Hi! So, I diverted medication as an RN, had a regulatory complaint, completed all the necessary programs and fines. I have since almost completed school for PMHNP. I am getting ready to start clinicals and I keep getting turned down for NP Student Liability Insurance related to the ding on my license.
Does anyone know of a company that accepts things like this??? High-risk...anything???
I hate to think I have wasted $60,000 on a partial degree I can't use.
Help!

Was the school you're attending aware of your high risk status? If so, they should have checked with their insurance carrier to see if you'd be covered.
If you didn't disclose your high risk status...well, that's a horse of a different color
Of course I disclosed. The school does not need to check with anything. I am not covered under them. Just bc of my past doesn’t mean I can’t better my education/job/future.

In other words the school should have checked BEFORE enrolling you. That would have given you time to sort things out before clinical. Is this a for-profit school by any chance?
I'll do some research and see if I can find anything to help you out!

I’m curious what school. When I went to clinical, I was covered under the schools Liability Insurance. It was something that was made clear in the agreements they made with the clinical sites. Given that you have no technical license, it is likely nobody would insure you personally. It’s the schools obligation to provide that. If they can’t, they should have notified you the day you made them aware of the history.

How much Liability Insurance does your school require? If it is under 50,000 or so perhaps you could post a bond and "self insure" (perhaps with the assistance of family members). Short of that perhaps you could transfer to a school that does not require liability insurance. My BSN at the University of Wyoming DID require this, but my PMHNP program at the University of Southern Indiana did not (I was covered under their insurance. The University of Wyoming required separate insurance on top of the school policy). There are still a few "diploma programs" and these would be less likely to require insurance that might also be an option. I know that during covid some states were even letting nursing students who had not yet taken the NCLEX to work as RN's so perhaps "high need" states (and hospitals) might be more inclined to offer opportunities.

I have come across a few programs that require you obtain your own insurance -this is addition to the Liability Insurance that you are covered under with their program. So, there are a few providers out there, however, with that ding on your license, that may affect your premium . . ..maybe

Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to your question but if you want, I could ask my friend who has been working as a nurse for many years yet. I also can perform you examples of reaction papers where this theme is discussed if you are interested.
