Hi, have a few Q's about Excelsior

Published

Hi, this is my first post on allnurses.com! Ok, i have a question or two, I am currently in an LPN program starting my second semester in Jan. and I have pretty much decided I definetly will go through Excelsior for my Associates in Nursing then on to my BSN. I attended a university for 3 years prior to my LPN program, and have all my pre-reqs for my Associates, actually almost all for my Bachelors except Algebra and I need to retake dev. psychology. Is there anything I can start doing now with Excelsior or do I need to wait till I have my LPN license before I contact them?

Also, make that I attended 2 productive years at an university and the last year there I flunked everything b/c of stressful personal ordeals and instead of taking a year off I kept trucking through in a sad attempt to use all my scholarship, and I literally flunked 2 semesters, my GPA is horrible like a 1.3 or something I'm afraid to look:o and it was a 2.9 before that year which wasnt bad. So my second question is will my bad GPA keep me from going through excelsior..I cant figure out if they are GPA based or not..I dont think I fully understand the programs requirements but I do know that I work best on my own and I need to work possibly full-time while I earn my other degrees. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

as of oct 1 ec switched over to a new curriculum . so i don't know all the in's and out's of the new stuff. i know there are 8 test now (3 credits each) . i still think you can complete several prior to enrollment. as far as your pre- classes ec will take any of your classes that are with a c and above. if i were you focus on your lpn course now . ec is a big commitment.

I agree. The biggest factor in getting accepted to EC will be your LPN licensure. For now, make sure nothing comes up that would prevent you from finishing that.

I third that! :) Welcome to allnurses!!

By the way, regarding the Life Span Dev. Psych, Excelsior accepts the Human Growth and Development CLEP test in place of Life Span. The CLEP test is much cheaper than the EC exam.

Fourth that! Take it from an LPN who wanted to do EC while in LPN school didn't happen. Studying for the Boards, plus orientation at a new job just have to handle all that first. I'm finally going to take my first test next month, passed boards in Oct, started new job in Nov.

Handle LPN first, plus now they are real fussy about having your license first. You can take Health Safety with out being enrolled. and what Lunah said about CLEPing is real good advice. Welcome to allnurses!!!!

Hey, thanks everyone for the replies. I am definetly fully focused on my LPN program..after such a bad academic year I went into the LPN program feeling pretty lousy about school, but I just finished my first semester with an average I was extremely happy with. I'm feeling back on top of my game! So no I certainly dont want to distract myself with other classes, I was just wondering if I should get in touch with them about what classes I would need, like academic advising...kind of how CC and universities lay out academic plans for you...and I was worried that they were a GPA based program..that's good news that they will take classes C or above..the classes I failed were oddball classes I had picked out for electives.

I'll just bookmark their website and check it out again when I get closer to graduation;). thanks again

oh, what is a CLEP test??

CLEP tests are computerized exams that you can take to "test out" of various subjects; they're somewhat similar to the way Excelsior exams work in that you study the subject until you're ready to test, but they're scored a bit differently (usually just pass/fail), and there are a limited amount of subjects that will apply to the Nursing program (for example, there are no CLEP exams for Microbiology or A&P). You can take CLEP exams at many colleges and universities. There is more info here: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html
