HFCC or WCCCD????

i everyone i'm to new to all nurses!!

i have a question i attend henry ford college and have most of my pre-req's done. (have to take chem 131 and net test). but i don't want to wait on the waitlist for 12-18 mos.:scrm: i was thinking about transferring to wcccd i have all but two pre-req's for their program done though (second part of anatomy and microbology). i have an b+in psychology,b in anatomy 1 and an a in english 1.

but the problem is should i just stay at hfcc or should i transfer to wcccd. and if i do transfer to wcccd will it be easy getting my transcripts in??(note: i have checked all classes transfer.)

it would really be helpful!!:rcgtku:

This is what I can tell you about WCCCD....

They are now requiring all transfer students to complete 12 credit hours AT WCCCD before they will evaluate your transcripts for the nursing department...This was always a college requirement. Now with your grades (wcccd doesnt honor +- so that doesnt matter) Your current GPA 3.3...

Now lets assume you get an A in Bio 250 and an A in Bio 295 that would put your GPA at 3.61 GPA....

This Fall entry the lowest GPA accepted was a 3.7 so keep that in mind when you make your decision....I believe that this January selection will not be as high because this was the highest in a long time...

Keep this in mind too: Assuming you would complete the Bio 250 and 295 this Fall you would be able to apply next May for Fall 2009 entry....Now assuming that you take Chm 131 and take the net this Fall for HFCC, you would be able to get put on the list in Jan 09 and with 12 to 18 month wait you would start Fall 2010?

That is a whole year difference.....If you decide to transfer I would take 12 credit hours this FALL at WCCCD and these are the classes I recommend...

Bio 250 with Kitakis, Bio 295 with Brem or Meyers, then I would also take HSC 200 online with Quick and one of your other correqs like DT 130 HSC 100 or BIO 252....

Fall registration already began and most of the instructors I have listed fill up fast so you may not get them...I am sure there are other good ones out there so you might want to ask around, but those who I had or heard are really good....Good luck in whatever you decide....It's a tough decision! :D

thank you!!!

what if i take dt 130,bio 252, eng 120 and american government requirement(by the way which classes) at wcccd, but take the two bio classes at hfcc. i'm going to do the other 4 at wcccd before i apply so that i can get the 12 credits in!!:clown:

you can do that too...it really just depends on when you want to apply and start....the soonest is apply this may for fall otherwise you can apply whenever you want to. it is all up to you....i would also take the net at hfcc so you can get on their wait list in case for some reason you don't get into wcccd...this way you have a back up plan....:specs:

Hi Erica!

I was once in your shoes; HFCC or WCCCD. I chose WCCCD and start the nursing program this fall.

I wanted to inform/remind you of something that many people overlook. WCCCD requires these courses be completed AND POSTED to your transcript prior to April 2st.

I had several friends that finished up their pre-req's in April (some had 4.0 GPA) but still couldn't apply for fall entry because their grades aren't posted until after-the-fact.

Anyhow, just trying to help - keep the aforementioned in mind when arranging your schedule.

 GOOD LUCK!

Is this only for transfer students or is this for everyone...I only ask because I have never heard this before....I knew you had to have your transcripts evaluated before a certain date but I didn't know that you needed your grades posted by April 1st which isn't possible if you are finishing up your prereq's in the Spring semester and want to apply in May.....I know a couple people who finished their prereq's last Spring and was able to apply in May for Fall 07...This must be something new they are doing...Anyway, great point to make because that would definitely make things more difficult.

:D

From my (witness) experience, it is true for everyone. I had two classmates in Micro that arrived to class just a LITTLE upset. They had planned on applying in May 08 for the fall 08 program and were both told (at different times - guess they were in the hall discussing their angst) that they would need to wait and apply for the winter 09 because the POSTING of their pre-reqs (inclusive of WebGate) were required no later than April 1st.

Our micro doc confirmed the information too.

Again, just what I witnessed, nothing in concrete...but I heard the instructors response with my own ears.

From experience: I had to take my Micro in the summer (last pre-req). I too, thought I could apply for fall but could not.

I just wanted to say that it really worked out well because it gave me a semester to work on the co-reqs. I managed it so that I didn't have to take another class w/the NUR classes. ;)

i forgot to add has anybody from hfcc waited less than what the nursing personnels told you.

Erica

I wouldn't put much trust in the website information. Last I checked, it had not been sufficiently updated in quite a while.

The program nursing classes are held at (Belleville) Western and (Detroit) NW campuses. They used to be held at the Downtown location too, but that's changed (in case someone mentions that - it's no longer an option).

WCCCD calculates your application GPA with these five required pre-reqs: English I, Psych, Micro, A&P I, and A&P II.

While I (and everyone else) would encourage you to take care of all sub-core pre-reqs, they will only consider your GPA inclusive of the sub-core grades IF it raises your overall GPA and IF you've applied and fall on the competition fence with other applicants (and at that point, they would also consider your NET scores to break any/all ties). Those sub-core classes are: Soc, Am.Govt, Eng II, MedMath, Patho, Lifespan and Nutrition. There is additional requirement associated with MedMath - in that it MUST be taken prior to completion of the initial portion of the first semester. It will not matter if you've earned equivalent 4.0 in lecture or clinical, or if you're everyone's personal IV calculator...you MUST successfully pass MedMath or you can't continue with the program.

As far as HFCC wait-list? I can only speak as a witness of a close friend that graduated last June. She was told 1.5 - 2 years and to continuously check with the nursing department to see where she was on the list. She called numerous times and finally - she was in - after ten months. Maybe it was luck, maybe it was a complete fluke, but ten months was a nice surprise.

Hope this helps?

This isn't exactly what I was talking about though....I was referring to her taking the last of her prereqs in the Spring semester which ends the beginning of May and grades would be posted BEFORE she needed them to apply by May 30th.....I still don't see how or why grades have to posted by April 1st in order to apply by May 30th....That just doesn't make any sense to me....but what do I know..LOL

Now, this thread is already a bit confusing, but thought I would add to it =) with my own experience and understanding.

I took my final three pre-reqs during the Spring 2008 term at WCCCD. I finished these classes in early May 2008, my grades were posted in WebGate in early May (profs only get a few days to do so) and had plenty of time to apply at the May 19th application meeting.

The April 1st deadline is for courses that are being transfered in from another college - the records department has to not only receive the transcripts but also evaluate them prior to April 1st in order to apply in May. So, pre-req classes taken at another college would essentially put you behind at least one semester in the application process. You also need to remember the 12 CH requirement before they will actually evaluate you records.

All of that being said, your best bet is to go to an information meeting, sit close to the stage, and take notes...:twocents:
