Hey May 06 grads..any of you seeking NICU?

Published

Hello all,

I just thought it might be intersting to see if there are any other 05/06 grads out there who plan to start out in the NICU? :nurse: I thought it might be fun to keep in touch and talk about looking for jobs, how our interviews go and what kind of orientation the different units offer. What do you guys think? Any takers...

Congrats Liz!!:nurse: That is great! I have two interviews coming up. I will keep you posted. I am also hoping to test soon after graduation. I am going to start studying in late March in hopes of being ready.

Take care!

Congratulations! I am very happy for you! I remember when I got the call saying I was hired for the new grad program in the NICU. I was so happy! It wouldn't hurt to start reading up on some neonatal books.

Be sure to keep us updated and get ready for your new adventure in NICU nursing. Hold on tight because it will be full of ups and downs especially in your first year.

Good luck!

Hey everyone...

I am a May 06 grad who just accepted a 12 hour night position in the NICU. It is a 40 bed unit where I currently work as a nurse extern. I've been there about 9 months and I LOVE it. Even though I am a current employee, I went through the entire RN interview process, with both HR and my nurse manager. Their orientation is 12 weeks- 10 weeks on days with two preceptors, and then 2 weeks on nights with a "mentor" (not sure how this is different from a preceptor) to orient to the routines and staff on that shift. Then they turn me loose..... good God... I'm so excited I kinda don't know what to do with myself!

Congratulations!

What is usually meant by "mentor" is that you will be on your own but will have a go-to person to ask questions and to watch over you, but he/she will have their own assignment as well, unlike a preceptor.

Hey all!! I hope your last semesters and terms are going well! I just started my last term and cannot wait for it to be done with. I'm sure the rest of you feel the same way. I am so excited to hear that the majority of us already know where we will be working and that it is in a NICU somewhere!

I just wanted to check in on all of my fellow May of 2006 graduates and see how everyone is doing. Please keep in touch!

Hey Liz and other grads!

Yep, very excited here. We going into midterms next week. I can't believe it is that time already. I have 6 more shifts in the NICU then I will be finished with my precepting experience. Most of my classes end in April. We graduate mid May so it will be a perfect opportunity to study and prepare. When do you guys plan on taking the nclex? I hope the end of May. Are you guys going to do Kaplan? I am signing up this week, but will not do the classes until May. The hospital that I signed on with will reimburse so I figured I really had no excuse not to.

Take care guys and keep up the good work. Our day is almost here!

Hey everyone!! I am graduating in May 2006 (FINALLY!!!) I currently work in a level 3 Nicu in PA, and plan to stay there after graduation!! I LOVEEE the Nicu and cant imagine doing anything else. My unit does not take new grads unless you were there as a clinical associate (which is what I do), so as long as there is a spot I am going for it. I also applied at another hospital just in case. May 2006 grads let me know how its going and yay for us!! haha...

Hi everyone!!! I graduate in May as well....down to 79 days left YES!!! I only got to go through the NICU for half a day, but absolutely fell in love with it. I have applied for two different hospital NICU positions, and plan to go to an open house this Saturday with the one I went through this past fall. I have an interview for a different area in that hospital Wednesday, and another interview lined up for the 17th with another hospital, but that one is a NICU position.....I'm scared to death, but soooo excited.

Congratulations Jackie!!! I don't have any tips for you as I am not starting in the NICU until after passing boards in June. According to everyone that I have talked to if you are not scared when you walk into the NICU to work then you need to work somewhere else. I think it is perfectly normal to be a little scared in the NICU. I think it keeps you on your toes more if you know what I mean. I would definitely be interested in hearing about your first day though. What all will you be responsible for doing?
