I just started my 1st semester at Southern Connecticut State University. I am a nursing major and I am trying to get all of my prereq's finished in time so that I can apply for the nursing program in at least the 1st semester of my 3rd year. I am living on campus and I love the whole college life thing.

The only thing that I am concerned with at this moment are my grades. Math 100 is very difficult for me because when you start graphing numbers things can get very confusing.

I just failed my midterm in Math 100 yesterday and I failed my A/P test. I am going crazy and I feel like I am having this inner struggle... like I am all alone. Has anyone else out there ever been in a hole similar to mine and if you have, what did you do about it.

Thanks so much for all of your help... I look forward to posting more on these boards! :-D

....I just want to be a nurse so bad....

Specializes in LTC, Acute care, Oncology, Public Health.

I've been there with you. Bombed my 1st A&P lab. Got like a 45 on it. By the way there was only 2 lab practicles and a few lecture tests. After I blew that test I sat myself down and said "How bad do you want it?" Took the time to answer, got my crap together and passed the class. I am in my first semester nursing. It took me till my 3rd year to get in. I took A&P I and A&P II by themselves because I knew it would be difficult. You might want to look at not taking difficult classes together. I think it has helped keep me from being burnt out in this semester.

Utilize the tutoring center...it's there for a reason, don't just try to "figure it out" on your own. If you don't understand it, go find someone who can help it make sense to you. Ask your instructors where you can get some help with the subject, join a study group, use online resources such as study guides and quizzes. DON'T cram, study often, study with variety (visual, auditory, write notes, re write notes, make charts) and take breaks often. Is there a study skills center on campus? USE it. It takes a while to get into your groove, but once you figure out what works best for you, you'll do fine.

Don't try to do it alone, there is help out there if you are struggling.

Good luck, you will do fine, you sound motivated!

Our A&P midterm had a 35% failure rate at my uni and that was BETTER than most previous years! So don't beat yourself up for not passing it...just try again and you'll make it :-)

....I just want to be a nurse so bad....

I definitely know what you mean! This is my first semester of actual nursing classes and they are kicking my butt! The bright side, however, is that I'm studying harder than ever before, learning more than I could ever imagine, and I am sure that because I failed my second nursing exam, my next exam grades will be that much better! I might even end up with a better grade all around when it's all over with.

Sometimes it takes a few slips and falls to get me going, but that's just me!

I sometimes learn more from failing an exam than I do from passing it.

It's painful but I'll probably be a better nurse because of it.

Keep your chin up and take one test at a time.

We as Westerners have our heads stuck waaaaaay in the future.

It's silly when you stop and think about it, but that's our culture.

Take care and keep us posted! It's always good to know you aren't alone, eh?

I hade to drop algebra my first time around in college. I just took it again, got a B the second time and trucked right on ahead and got my degree in 3 1/2 years. Now I'm back for round 2. ;) Hang in there and study hard! Sit in front, study hard, and use the math lab/tutors, etc. if needed.

Worthwhile things are never easy...you are getting some good advice...sometimes we take on too much...it is better to drop one class sometimes and concentrate on another..you will have time to pick up that class when you are more skilled at studying and when you have learned to discipline yourself...everything that you learn today you will retain and it will be there for you in the future...put the bricks together and the house will rise

you are taking two difficult courses at one time. If you know what type testtakeer you are and how you do understress drop one if you can't handle it. I was just like you . Stop and breathe deeply. And think Rome was not built in a day neither was the earth God rested on the sabbath day. The same applies to us. You want to be a nurse so bad and you do really want this do what it takes to get you there and no more than you can handle don't rush it is meant to be. Take your time and do what is needed. Good Luck

You know what so funny, and I see it now more then ever in my last year in nursing school, when you are busy cramming so much information into your poor little head and think to yourself 'How can I possibly learn everything, It's too much, too fast' You are actually learing SO MUCH. I laugh looking back how many times I went into a test thinking I know nothing to remebering a lot of it later on! Goodluck, You'll catch on! XOXOXO

Thanks so much everyone for your support. It is greatly appreciated. I'm just sitting down, eating dinner and studying right now. Thanks again... I'll keep posting :-D
