Hello everyone! I'm currently studying for my HESI A2 for the nursing program at Phoenix College. Does anyone have any tips for me while I study? I think I have a pretty solid idea of what will be covered in the math portion of the exam.
I have been using the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review book by Evolve Elsevier (4th Edition) to study. I noticed the book covers biology, physics, chemistry, and A&P; however, on my school's website it doesn't mention these areas. Has anyone recently taken the HESI at Phoenix College, or any of the Maricopa colleges? Are these subjects necessary to study?

Hi, I was in the same boat. I took the Hesi at PC too. I recommend you study the reading, math and spelling parts. Majooof the test was based on them. Just learn it verbatim that way the test be like 2nd nature. I also recommend you use this site called quizlet. Type in hesi a2 and different test pop up. It helped me a lot. Good luck and put in that work!!!
Okay, cool! Thank you so much! So there wasn't anything from A&P on the exam?

Phoenix college has a hesi prep class that you can sign up for. It's in person and about 2 hours I believe. I took my hesi at pc, but I did not attend the class. I have the same book as you and it was enough for me.
I cant lie there are a few questions from A/P but majority and the questions that count are the spelling, reading and math. The book is all you need but like i said try that site for some help. The test is 4 hours long and you'll need to prepare mentally for that amount of time. You will do great if you study the book!!

I recently took the HESI for the Maricopa Community College Nursing program. From my understanding, Maricopa only tests for math and English.
The English exam is broken down into separate exams for: reading/comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. You get a percentage grade for each individual exam, then an average (cumulative) grade for all the tests (including math), which is your final HESI score... the one you present when you submit your application.
Hence, I was not tested on any of sciences in the HESI I took. Math & English only. I took it at Glendale Community College on Olive. It cost $40. It's a long exam, they allow 4 hours and I took most of that 4 hours. TIP..allow enough time to register for the exam in the testing center, head over to the cashier's office to pay, then get back to testing and be relaxed enough for the exam. Call ahead for the testing hours, because they might vary by day and/or college you test at.
The exam gives you your results immediately, so you can assess how you're doing. The math is fairly straight forward, lots of ratios and fractions, percentages, a few metric questions, that type of thing.
The English is reading a paragraph that is totally random (I think one of mine was about trout fishing, if I recall correctly!), then answer questions about what you read. There are about 4+ different paragraphs to read (with questions that follow). There is a section on word definitions. Then there is a section on grammar, such as correct use of verbs, spelling, predicates etc.
When you finish and check-out at the desk, they will print off a copy of your exam results then and there. If you passed (for Maricopa the math is 75% and English cumulative is 85%, I think), then you'll be fine. If you failed, then you will have access to the website that runs the exam for additional help/remediation.
Are you hoping to apply for the ADN or the CEP nursing program? The CEP is very competitive, and you really want to get your overall HESI score in the 90+%. A passing grade (as mentioned above) is great, but is unlikely to get you a place on the CEP.
The ADN, on the other hand, has a waiting list entry, and I believe as long as you meet the passing grade requirements, you'll be fine. Check with PCC to be sure though!
You're not allowed to take anything into the exam, even water, so make sure you have eaten and are hydrated before you go in, and use the rest-room because you can't leave the exam to go to the bathroom! Also, take some deep breaths before you start, and take your time reading the questions. You have 4 hours, and even if one question takes time, you can catch up on the easier ones.
Keep using the book, look online for free HESI tests, there are quite a few out there. Some people like the APs you can get. They cost about $10, I think.
Good luck!

I took the test from gateway community college. But before that, I took it 2 times in a different school. I highly suggest for you to remember the "hesi hints" from the practice book. Also, the vocabulary is like context clues stuff so read it carefully..or you can use quizlet.
Grammar is eh. Just try to remember the rules of speech and the hints from the book will help because that's whats on the test.
Reading is common sense. Read the question first then find the answer on the paragraph
And for math, learn how to convert and solve fractions. Memorize the given conversions from the book. As soon as you start your test, write it on your scratch paper so you can have like a cheat sheet.
Best of luck!

What did you score?
If you don't mind what were you able to score on the test by chance?
