Theres been a few threads about conduct and whats right to do while at work. What about speaking another language in front of patients?
I know that the USA doesn't have a "language"...but I'm wondering if other countries establish theirs?I cannot help but to notice that all of the following are in English:
1) Declaration of Independence
2) Traffic Signs
3) DMV Licenses
4) Presidential Speeches
..............I dunno..was just a thought.
And yet none of those set forth an official language. Other countries explicitly establish an official language.
We are a majority English speaking country, so it would make sense that most communication and official documents are in English, but it would seem like a waste of legislation and lawmaker time to declare an official language (and lord knows they waste enough time as it is). But I do think that speaking another language to be exclusive is rude. When you're doing it to facilitate communication and understanding, that's a whole other ballgame.
Try this for a perspective: Would you stand at a patient's bedside, or for that matter sit at the nurse's station and whisper behind your hand into the ear of a coworker while others were present? Speaking in a language not understood by the third party in front of them is equally rude.
When speaking in front of a non English speaking patient I make every effort to have someone present translate all conversation or use my limited vocabulary and acting skills to make sure they understand at least the topic of conversation.
Most of the time, people who speak English fluently, who then switch to their native language when they see you coming are either doing one of two things-
1. Yes believe it, they most likely just made a comment about you:).
2. They are having a conversation they don't want you getting involved in.:)

It just makes me feel like, when someone does that, they are too ignorant to mind their manners and take common courtesy into consideration. I look down at those types of people. It's tacky & tasteless. There is no need for it unless in certain situation.
