Back in the winter of '81, I was living in a cabin, paying $50 a month rent and heating it primarily with a wood stove. The Winter of '81 was one of the coldest in recent history with a lot of snow. So, I spent up to a week without actually going out and having company with another human being.
I had been laid off from my job as a Weatherizer, so I had a lot of time to consider life and my future. I remember wondering: "What work could I do that had a low incidence of layoff?" I wanted a job where I could feel like I was contributing, had the potential to hold my interest, was well paid, and did not require eons of the educational process.
Like Daniel Gilbert Stumbling on Happiness, I stumbled upon Nursing. My stumbling revelatory decision continues to be rienforced to this day.
