Helping with Human Trafficking Canada

Nurses Activism

Published

This is my passion/long term goal personally/professionally to apply my nursing education. Long way to go, lots to learn but public health must have a place for me in future nursing career.

Anyone feel free to provide me with more info.

No public health isn't the way to go.

Non-profit inner city agencies are. You don't say where in the country you are but there are many agencies across the nation that work with the sex trade.

Thanks very much for your direction Fiona. I am in Manitoba, Canada. I have been in touch with the Joy Smith Foundation, high profile Winnipeg MP battling human trafficking. Wanted to know if there were other options, especially since right now, as a nursing student, I can volunteer limited time but not $ YET

Specializes in critical care.

Are you in a nursing program now, or are you still working on pre-reqs? This seems like a good path for social work or psychology. For nursing, womens health and psychiatric health would be great specialties. There are NP degrees specific to WH and psych as well, if you'd like the ability to help with a larger scope of practice.

Hi, I am going into the 4th year of my degree. Probably would be the right way to go to specialize after and go into psych health/women's health-thanks!

Anytime! I think it is wonderful what you are hoping to do. I also have found a love that doesn't perfectly fall within the normal lines that nursing covers (it's a bit more psychology oriented, but that's okay!). The advantage to the nursing path is that it really does have a great scope of practice even at the bachelors or associates level, and you will have more versatility than if you had initially gone through a sociology or psychology masters/doctorate. If you're a phd in psychology, you can't exactly wake up one day and decide, "I think I'd rather be in cardiology now."

Best wishes to you!

Thanks so much-very encouraging and inspiring. Best to you in your career also:)
