Help us answer this question!

In patients with HIV/AIDS who suffer from mouth lesions, one of the foods to recommend is:

a. potato chips

b. orange juice

c. peanut butter

d. baked chicken

Well, clearly we've eliminated option A and B:yeah:. Option A is too hard and too salty. Option B is too acidic.

My study group is having a little friendly debate over option C and D.

Two of say C and Two of us say D. Hmmmm.

The rationale for C is that the patient has mouth lesions possibly impaired chewing/swallowing. Peanut butter is soft and it's also room temperature, so it may be better. Chicken may be too course. The rationale for D is that it would be easier to swallow and that Peanut Butter is too sticky. I chose D, then I chose C, then I chose D, now I'm back at C.....

Can someone give me their answer and their rationale and help us solve this?

Thanks!

C is my answer.

C is my answer.

Why did you choose C?

I sure hope you are given the correct answer in class and can let us know!!

I know!!lol I think most people are going with C. It's amazing how a question that seems easy, can be difficult because we can THINK about it too much. I keep changing my mind, but I'm going to stick with D and pretend that this is a real test and not change my answer. I'll let everyone know on Monday!

I'm going with D. Peanut butter is "clingy," and unless you can do good oral hygiene (something that is unlikely to happen in someone with mouth sores), it could be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Years ago, I had a mouth and throat infection with tons of open sores. I preferred to eat slippery soft foods or things that I could easily chew and swallow. I didn't like foods that were sticky or that stayed behind after I swallowed. Even rubbing my tongue on the sores caused terrible pain.

BTW, just because the chicken is baked, that doesn't mean you eat it straight out of the oven. I would think chicken that has cooled a bit would be just fine.

I would say chicken. I think PB would be too thick

I'm choosing D. Although you can definitely present a case for C, the stickiness in someone with mouth sores just puts me off.

I can't wait to read the answer tomorrow!!

I want to change my answer to D... The more I think about it, chicken is a soft bland food that won't stick to the ulcers, etc... Of course, just like when I was in school, now that I've changed my answer, it'll be the wrong one!!!

Okay, everyone the answer IS D! My instructor understood why someone would choose C, but D is the BEST choice. She said that A=too salty, B=too acidic and C=salty and there would be issues with the mucous membranes (oral care, the stickyness of Peanut Butter, difficulty getting it down). She basically said that in a REAL patient there may be difficulty with chewing the chicken or swallowing it,she could see that but that the best test answer is D.

Thanks to EVERYONE that answered!! I appreciate it!

did you let her know we had heated debates on allnurses.com about it? She'd probably get a kick out of it... I'm so glad I changed my answer last minute!!!

No, but I did tell her that a lot of my friends were debating the answer to the question all weekend, that most of them chose C, AND that they were waiting for her answer to that question. lol
