help with resume after career change to nurse

Nurses General Nursing

I am getting ready to graduate and need help to get together a resume but am unsure what information to include and how to include it. The first thing is that i cared for my own son, for 14 years that required nursing care - with tube feedings, seizure disorder, oxygen, suctioning, and multiple surgeries and health issues. I am unsure if I should include this at all but it is 14 years of pediatric experience. also I have a bachelors in microbiology and have worked for 3 different pharmaceutical companies, a company doing clinical trials, and a medical manufacturer where I was a product manager - so hands on experience with all the medical lab products as well as managerial experience. I am graduating with my lpn and am already registered for rn classes but i want to get some part time work for experience. Would love to hear from all experienced nurses, nurse managers or anyone with any opinion on how to and what to incorporate!!

thanks

jp

This is a good reference once you start getting nursing experience: Expert Resumes for Health Care Careers, Wendy S. Enelow and Louise M. Kursmark, Jist Works, 2004. ISBN 1-59357-000-7

Only about $16.95 at one of the major bookstores.

I also need help with my resume writing skills. I am a new grad (May 09) and I am having a problem with my resume. I am also working in long-term care due to no jobs in my area for an RN in a hospital setting. I have heard so many bad things about long-term care and how it is hard to get a hospital job after working in a nursing home. I am in a re-hab unit and also have hospice patients. ANy suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would also like a copy of your resume to use for an example if possible.

good luck with your job search and in nursing school. employers know that new grads have no nursing experience and do not expect to see any on a resume. you will need a recommendation from one of your nursing instructors. nursing employers will not be interested in your previous employment other than to find out if you had a good attendance record and if your were a problem employee (if they can get their hands on that information). i would find a way to mention the home care you did for your son on the resume. here are weblinks to help with writing a resume, specifically for nurses.

great info. a must read!!!!
