U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hey guys, Im new to this website and need some info ASAP.I will be relocating to the Phoenix area and am considering employment with Maryvale. I don't know much about this hospital, but have read some past forums. In the forums that I did read I saw something like " Maryvale / Scaryvale??? PLease PLease ellaborate! I got offered a position there recently and have NOT accepted the postition yet but am considering it. I am a new grad and feel that in my position the first year out of nursing school is very very critical. The position is in the ED. I also am a Paramedic, if there are any EMS personnel that are also nurses : please let me know what the ED is like and and how well overall is patient care is. I am really excited about the move and was very excited about a possible position in the ED, but I really want to be informed. So please ellaborate on Maryvale/Scaryvale???:down::confused:

From what I've read as well, I think basically people say that the hospital doesn't always have resources available so they have to send people out to other hospitals and I'm guessing that by the time they reach another hospital, they aren't always in such good condition so people call it "scaryvale" because of the condition of the patient. I actually myself have an offer to work ER there and haven't yet turned it down but figure that I may actually. I did visit already and felt that the staff worked very well together and it seems to be a good environment. They also offer pretty good tuition reimbursment, relocation assistance, and pay. I personally was looking for a slightly bigger hospital....they can hold over 200 beds but usually only have 60-80 filled beds at a given time.

And please never think that you have to be unhappy in a job just because you are a GN. I am a new GN as well and have had wonderful offers. It just depends on how hard you search and how much time and effort you put into visiting places that you are interested. I am still on a 2 week vacation to find the perfect fit. I visited for 1 week in Arizona and am currently in Texas looking. I've decided that I will most likely work for Northwest Medical Center in Tucson if I move to Arizona. Have you considered Tucson.... it may be a bit smaller but it is a lot cleaner and the have wonderful hospitals as well. Let me know if you need more info. You can e-mail me or whatever

Hey thanks, was the hospital clean? and what was the overall feel that you got while you were there? Can I also asked what incentives that they offered you. I pretty much have to stay around the Phoenix area, my husband has a job around that area. I have also looked into other hospitals and have

Hey thanks for the info. Was the hospital pretty clean? What was the overall feel for the place/ED? I'm pretty much limited to the Phoenix area, my husband's job is in that area. Can I ask what type of incentives they offered you? I have looked into other hospitals ST.Joe's, I spoke with a nurse recriuter and they will be contacting me for an interview soon. I also had an interview for another hospital and got offered a position on a med-surg floor. Good luck in Tucson!!

Unless you speak Spanish, you will have great difficulty communicating with most of the patients at Maryvale. I did OB/GYN clinicals there and the place is clean.....but the air seems to have a stench to it in the whole hospital.

Heads up about St. Joe's - their parking is horrible on day shift. New employees have to park about 2 miles away and take a shuttle bus to work. If your shift starts at 7AM, you have to be at the shuttle parking by 6:20 AM. They don't tell you that until orientation. They have excellent benefits though - and if you work the weekend days you automatically get time and a half!

I didn't "smell" anything outragous. I have been in worse hospitals such as Phoenix baptist for instance. But honestly, it isn't that bad. If you aren't picky, it's fine but it is SMALL. I've heard pretty good things about St. Joe's from patients around. And I don't think the parking thing seems too bad if they offer a free shuttle because I was going to have to do that back in Michigan. Just remember, you do have options and don't ever make an employer feel like you need the job because right down the road, there is always another hospital that will take you. And I have found that if I go in with that kind of relaxed attitude, I am much more relaxed and have better interviews. I think Maryvale was offering 25/hr (I have some previous LPN experience) and they were offering 100% tuition reimbersment for continuing education, as well as about $5000 for relocation. Not too shabby but now I'm looking for ICU experience. Also remember that there is always going to be at least one person to say something negative about each hospital you interview at. So go in with an open mind and with your own expectations. And good luck!

That's (obviously) how it was when I worked at County (great hospital, btw) and I didn't know a lick of Spanish ..... but by the time I left there I knew quite a bit! So don't let not knowing Spanish hinder you.

You can always find work at a hospital that isn't as heavy on the spanish speakers.. for example, any of the hospitals in North Scottsdale, very clean. Like Scottsdale Shae, it is like a resort.. . And of course there is the Mayo Clinic up there too. Those are nice and clean.

Also, on the comment of Tucson.. there are dirty places in both Phx and Tucson.. depends on where you are at.. there are more in Phx because there is just more here.. there are also more really clean places.. it is a very different feel though. Tucson feels much more like "natural" desert. If you like bigger city attractions though then Phx is the place.

True, you won't run into many Spanish only speakers up in the Scottsdale hospitals. Instead you have to deal with the picky, snotty, lawsuit-happy folks ;)

I personally love the Spanish speaking population. But that's what's great about Phx ...... there is a hospital with a different patient population for just about anyone, so you should be able to find exactly what you're looking for if you just look around.

exactly last post, you have a whole new set of people to deal with. I don't know very much spanish. But I almost wonder if I was in a hospital where there was a lot of Spanish being spoken if I could pick more up. So, I guess that could be a perk.. but I guess it just depends on an individuals comfort level with languages, especially if they know little to none of the language being spoken.
