Here.I.Stand, RN Thank you. I appreciate your kindness.

Your problems seems to be you! You know this stuff. I had the same problem (and at times still struggle with it) Ask yourself if this is the last thing that I must do for this patient and then go home - will it be enough? What danger will it bring to the patient? Make your decision and move on. You can do this!! Why, because this is what we do everyday. Good luck!!!

@Val1023. I highly suggest you have this post removed. this is a small world and potentially your employer might see that you have posted the questions online. Good luck!

This thread is pretty dicey but I'm just going to toss it there for everyone in home care, telling the caregiver "I can't but you can" is a form of endorsement. It's not about actually putting the pill in the patient's mouth but putting your nursing approval behind it. Telling mom she can give something that isn't ordered by the dr is the same as saying it's okay for the kid to have it. Kid suffers an adverse reaction, you think because you didn't directly administer the med that you're off the hook?

It's simple, "I don't have the authority to tell you it's okay to give the unordered med."

Simpler is having adequate prns ordered.

We wish you the best with your employment. Agree with other posters that you need to concentrate on getting you well first.

Take care.
