HELP! Ostomy bag will NOT stay on!

Published

I need help! My primary has a double stoma ostomy bag that absolutely will not stay on! We are having to change the bag at least every shift if not more often. Our Ostomy nurses have even run out of tricks! Any suggestions?? We are using Hollister one piece bags and have tried stoma paste, wafers and even duoderm under and over the edges!!! Any tips will be greatly appreciated!

I think Benzoin is a wonderful idea!! I need to inquire if my facility has it!

Plus, I LOVE the way benzoin smells! :) Especially when dealing with the ostomy stink lol.

Large one piece duoderm with center hole cut in works well. the entire space under the wafer should be covered.

There should be nothing between the skin and the duoderm.

I learned of the wonders of Tincture of Benzoin recently, but alas, I came late to the thread and now have nothing to add. :)

I was about to pull my hair out over this kids bag falling off...an older charge nurse hooked me up with ToB and it was great.

I can see using the benzoin in older kids; but little one's skin is so absorbant. I thought Benzoin was removed from NICU's because it is unhealthy for them...anybody else? We used to use it on a lot of stuff years ago, and yes, it does hold well.

I did a search on the web about the use of benzoin and preemies with ostomies and came across this great faq page about the preemie pouch (looks like what our NICU uses) and is written by ostomy nurses. I thought it was a very good read and addressed a lot of what other nurses have already discussed here. By the way, they said benzoin and adhesive removers are not recommended on neonates.

Hi

We have used glycerin with stoma powder and questran all mixed together. You can spread it as thin or as thick as you need it in different areas
