Help! No Jobs in Corpus Christi?

Published

Does anyone here live in the Corpus Christi area? If so, where did you find jobs?

I just graduated from nursing school in the Houston area, but I want to move to Corpus Christi to be near my fiance (we've spent 2 years living 4 hours apart, and I'm more than ready to fix that). I've spent the last week and a half in CC applying and interviewing, and it seems that there are very few GN postitions and most (possibly all) of them are filled. I've applied online for almost every position listed with the Christus Spohn network, Corpus Christi medical center, and even sent some apps out for various psychiatric facilities/units nearby.

I'm starting to get discouraged, and I'm not sure what my "plan B" should be. Do I work as a tech until the next GN pick-up wave? Do I forget about hospital nursing and just go hand out copies of my resume to physician offices like a salesperson?

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've got my GN permit on the BNE site and my ATT, I just need a job!

i feel ya...same thing out my way....

Well, still nothing. I honestly never thought that I would be waiting around for callbacks from med/surg units. I thought that there was supposedly a nursing shortage, (especially in med/surg) but perhaps that has come and gone already. I'm really starting to feel a bit discouraged here. I don't even know what dates the GN programs pick up in Corpus....anybody at least want to share that?

I moved to Corpus right after I graduated too (march 08). I didn't find a job right away as a gvn either. I took my nclex as soon as I could...passed and went to home health. The hospital's here pay 13.50 starting out for a new nurse. Home health pay varies from 16.50 to 22 depending on what agency you go to. I heard that cc nursing and rehab off saratoga and cimmaron pays their nurses well and they will work with a new nurse.

Thanks! I finally found a position at a psychiatric facility, but that information is much appreciated :wink2:

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

$13.50 for a new RN?! That's crazy, all our hard work and schooling and that's all the more you folks make down there.

I thought that $13.50 seemed low as well, so I did some asking around at work today. I was told that the bigger hospitals here start GNs and new grads anywhere between $18 and $22. In Houston, my classmates are being started at $22 to $25, shift differentials for the weekends or 3-11/11-7 are ranging from $1.50 to $3. I think that some of the smaller places here in Corpus are willing to offer comparable pay to help reduce the need for significantly more expensive travel/agency nurses.

She's a Graduate Vocational Nurse (GVN), not GN.

Still for going to school it's not enough IMO. I know up here it's not uncommon for LPN's to make so little, but I think it's sad.

This doesnt seem like fair pay for a VN. I am in California. New grad LVN. Just got a job in SNF pays $22/hour with no experience.

Specializes in dialysis (mostly) some L&D, Rehab/LTC.

I lived in CA as a RN and $22/hr is crap...COL eats it up....
