HELP: Nevada LPN Moving To California As An Excelsior Student

Published

I'm seeking advice. I'm a LPN from Nevada who is currently an Excelsior student. The problem is that my fiance is the militaryand is stationed in San Diego. My dilema is that I just found out CA doesn't accept Excelsior graduates for initial licensure. Ok I get it CA doesn't accept Excelsior and that's CAs right, but when I asked what they meant by Excelsior graduates will be evaluated on a case by case basis. That is very broad, what does that mean? They just repeated what was on their website instead of explaining what is meant by reviewing applicants on a case by case basis. Lame answer.I would like to know if anybody has been in my situation and if anybody has successfully able to endorse in and what requirements they had to go thru. Thanks Angie

Supposedly after 1000 hours of working as an RN, the CA BON will allow you to endorse in. I am guessing they use the standard case by case reply, because it doesn't open the flood gates so to speak to EC grads because most won't waste their money just to try, and they won't have to worry about state schools complaining to them.

You could always go to ISU, or stay with EC, work for 1000 hours after your RN and try and see. I can tell you one thing, don't count on the CA BON to spell it out for you.

With all the time and effort I'm spending doing my research I'm afraid I'm going to hit a dead end. I'm just waiting for a straight answer from the CA BRN. I don't get it, they keep dodging my questions and give me some useless information that is 180 degrees in the opposite direction from what I originally asked. Or they just simply dodge the question. I don't see what the big secret is, it's a simple question and the CA BRN seems to have a problem answering it. Sighhhh

If anybody has endorsed into CA whether they endorsed with experience or not I'd love to hear from you.

It would certainly be interesting to hear from anyone who was successful on one of these "case by case" efforts.

Does anyone know if military spouses who have to relocate often are one of the "case by case" situations that get special considerations? It just seems that many institutions give special consideration to military families because they have little choice of where the government sends them, BONs should too. Excelsior is truly my only option because we uproot so often. I started an RN program in Austin, TX, but we had to leave Texas and my credits would not transfer. Also, if I work for a military hospital will this be considered government and therefore I will not have to meet the Rules and Regulations of the state? If this is true I'm concerned that many Excelsior graduates will try and go this route. Are military spouses given priority even if they may not be as qualified as someone with no military affiliation.

I am a future military spouse but I do not think that makes a difference.

The 1000 hours is what I was told, but I've never actually heard of anyone being approved after they apply.

At this moment I am not a fan of the CA BRN as they are being very unreasonable. I am willing to do additional clinical hours just to satisfy their requirement and I am also willing to use Washington or Colorado as my state so that way I can complete their clinical requirement after I pass the CPNE. All of this just to get the clinicals to satisfy CAs requirement.
