1.your name, and type of nurse

ukstudent, this is the internet and will not use my real name. you can make any name up that you want to. i am a surgical icu nurse in a level 1 trauma center.

2. please describe an ethical conflict situation in nursing practice that you have encountered.

pt post cabg x 5 with multiple complications. after several weeks in the icu had been trached and pegged, still on and off pressors for multiple rounds of sepsis, sternum removed, flap done. pt begged me to "please stop and let me die."

3. how did you deal with that ethical conflict?how it was resolved? and what personal values were involved?

called the ethics panel. it was not resolved, the pt did not have advance directives and the family wanted every thing done. the value of self determination. the pt was not allowed to stop medical care.

4. were you satisfied with how the ethical conflict was resolved?

no.

5. did you refer to the code of ethics for nurses in dealing with the conflict?

no, as a working nurse you get to refine what to you is right and wrong. we all draw a line some were and for each of us, it is a different line. i still remember the look in this eyes, the silent tears running down his face as he realized that none of us would stop and let him go. the loss of internal light in his eyes over the following weeks as interventions continued, until he coded and we couldn't get him back. yes, cpr was done as the family still wanted everything done.
