Hello everyone,
I am re-entering the nurse workforce after 7 years. I was addicted to pain meds and left it. I have been clean for 6 years come March and am quite proud of that. I am presently on probation though, and need to take a refresher course, which I have paid and signed up for, only to find that I am having a very difficult time getting Liability Insurance necessary for the 6 clinicals involved in the refresher course. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks

Welcome to Allnurses. I hope you get some help here, and then stick around for a while. Good luck and congratulations on your sobriety!
Thank you so much for the welcome and the Serenity prayer, it is practically in a loop in my head these days. This has all been very difficult, but it is only in sobriety that I could do it at all. Looking forward to reading more posts and enjoying your website.

I live in Texas, and in this state NSO charges $300 for a measly $150,000 policy. They claim that Texas is a highly litigious state for practice.
Instead, I went through http://www.proliability.com and obtained a $6 million aggregate policy for about $100 per year. Good luck with your journey to obtaining malpractice insurance.

I had the same problem. NSO and Marsch denied me coverage as did several other companies. I had one complaint made to the BON, and was unable to fulfill the required 2 years of OB experience, as I couldn't find a job in OB. I was even certified in inpatient obstetrics, and in fetal monitoring. My past is that of behavioral problems secondary to depression. I have been out of nursing for 6 years, and had surrendered my license. I have had counciling, DBT, anger management, retaken NCLEX, and had signed up for a collegate refresher class. I couldn't get any Liability Insurance to cover me for as little as 3 weeks while I did clinicals. My school let me take the didactic classes and refunded the amount that I paid for the clinical experience. I felt that I had missed out on the part of the class that I wanted the most, but there wasn't anything I could do.
I wish you the best of luck, and, if you are able to find a company that will insure you, please let us know. There are other nurses in this state with the same problems.
Thank you Judy Ann, Lacie and The Commuter,
Your kindess and support is welcome. I do have a hard time dealing with the judgement people so quickly impose when they hear I'm on probation. The whole change in demeanor, either the cold shoulder or digging for all the dirty details. I suppose I was like that too once, I just never thought it could happen to me. I look around my Nurse Support Group and honestly, it could be Sunday morning services at church. Nice people, educated men and women, young and old. It can happen to anyone. Remeber the old adage "Walk a mile in my shoes..", that goes for all aspects of life, including your co-workers. Be kind. Anyway, thanks again, I will continue trying different companies. Have been rejected by CM&F, Have paperwork in at NOS but a fellow probationee in my group just got rejected by them so I'm not expecting much. Also HPSO and Proliability have all my info, but no word yet. Will also try putting it on the Voy Forum (who knew there was such a place!). I am grateful for your input.
I think you will find a great deal of support at the voy site. Also it's a great place when you just want to scream to vent to do so without repercussions. It's bad enough you are having to jump through hoops and not be able to speak your mind when something happens or you are in disagreement. I believe there are several there from Cali also that may be of use for you. :) Best of all it's pretty much anonymous for posting also.

Check with your home owner insurance company.

What level of coverage does your school require? Would it be possible to see if the school can negotiate a high deductable for you. Homeowners riders are also available but I'm hesitant to allow other grubby fingers on my deed. Try your auto insurance company. Try your state nurses' association.
You're back and you need support not stress from the bean counters. Good luck.
