Hi. I know everyone already knows this but I was answering a Saunders Q&A 5th Ed question regarding PPE and I'm getting a bit confused.
According to the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/HAI/pdfs/ppe/ppeposter148.pdf), you're supposed to remove:
1. gloves first
2. goggles
3. gown
4. mask
This is the question from the book (Saunders Q&A 5E):
A nurse has cared for a client on isolation that required the use of gloves, a mask, goggles, and a gown. Number in order of priority how the nurse removes the protective items on leaving the client's room. (Number 1 is the first action and number 6 is the last action)
__ removes goggles
__ removes the mask
__ removes the gloves
__ allows the gown to fall from the shoulders
__ unties the neck strings and the back strings of the gown
__ holds the gown inside at the shoulder seams, folds it inside out, and discards it in the appropriate trash receptacle or laundry bag
The correct answer in the book is: 6,2,1,4,3,5.
I'm getting confused what I should follow. Can anyone please help me? Or am I missing something?

First, remove you gloves. Then, you remove goggles, then the gown by first untying strings, then let it fall to shoulders, then fold it inside out/bundle up, then last is mask.

Yes but according to the book, the correct answer or the correct order is:
1. remove gloves
2. remove mask
3. untie the neck strings and back strings of gown
4. allow the gown to fall from shoulders
5. hold the gown inside at the shoulder seams, etc...
6. remove goggles
so I'm confused what I should follow...CDC or Saunders. that was what i answered first though.
Vumblevee, CDC created the guidelines, definitely go with CDC. Saunders is a book that can have typos. If you tell me the page, I will look at mine.
It's question # 515, page 254.
In addition to that, I have other NCLEX review books that confirm CDC guidelines.
Okay thank you that was all I needed to hear! My exam is on September 29 and I can not afford to get confused at this time. I was stuck with this item for a couple minutes, it was such a time waster. Couldn't figure out why it was different.
Thank you again! And...GOOD LUCK
ok, I have the comprehensive book (not q and a; sorry). But, yes the order I told you is correct because the idea is to prevent contamination. Plus, if you are in an isolation that requires a mask (such as airborne) you would catch it if you didn't remove mask last. Just remember, if washing your hands is thrown in, that is last.
Ok :) Yep it's the Q&A one, blue color.
application: gown, mask, goggles, gloves
removal: gloves, goggles, gown, mask, wash your hands last
Yep that's the one I knew. Thank you again!!

You wont be asked a question like this on NCLEX like this one in Saunders. Remember the removal of PPE is done in alphabetical order: Gloves, goggles, gown, mask. That's what you'll need to know for NCLEX
