Help! Excelsior Or Community College

Published

I'm New To This Website. I'm An Lpn Wanting To Get My Rn. I've Completed All The Prereqs That Satisfy Excelsior As Well As Our Local College. Problem - Waiting List For Community College Or Jump Into Excelsior. I Don't Know Anyone Who Has Taken Excelsior. It Would Be Nice To Do It On My Own Time. I'm A Motivated Person And Do Well As A Solo Learner. However, I've Heard Negative Comments About The Fail Rate Of Excelsiors Clinical Portion And That Alot Of States Are Turning Away From The Program. I Would Love To Get Some Feedback From Those Who've Taken Excelsior Or Are Currently Enrolled. I Am Confused. Spoke To College Network. They Informed Me That All My Credits Will Transfer, Leaving Me To Take The Nursing Classes. Please Help!

Specializes in ICU.

The fail rate for first time CPNE takers is, I think, about 38%. You can check with Excelsior but I think that is correct.

Excelsior is "doable." The problem with Excelsior and all distance learning is exactly what you think - motivation. I would have been better served had I gone to a traditional ADn program because I would have finished sooner.

I know several other nurses in real life who have completed the Excelsior program and rec'd their RN.

Specializes in ICU, PICC Nurse, Nursing Supervisor.

This is what Im worried about ,failing the CPNE then having to shell out another 1600 or so to do it again. Who can afford that in one sitting???? Other wise I would have already done the program.

A motivated person can finish EC in 1/4 of the time. There are people who finish in 6 months. There isn't a traditional program that you can do that with. Just schedule the time for the next test and push yourself. For example, you just finished the test for micro, schedule the one for NC1 in 3 weeks. That means actually calling and paying the fee. Now you have your goal set and off you go! If you can stay motivated and goal driven, then ec is the way to go!

With the CPNE 6-7 pass the first time (check w/ec).
