Hello all,
I just received my packet for Diversion and read through it today. I knew about the hand sanitizer but didn't think about soy sauce! I consumed the beef and broccoli dish from Trader Joe's and just read the ingredients that said there is soy sauce in the chili sauce used! I consumed this on Friday but I am afraid that I may get a random test on Sunday! It was cooked but I didn't realize there was soy sauce in it! Is it possible that I may have a false positive? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I'm from Illinois, but I got a false positive once for ETS (ETG was neg) so they did further testing using a PETH test, which was negative. The PETH test is a blood test that looks back 3 weeks and can only detect if you had 5 or more drinks during that time. Since that was negative they dropped it. It is well documented that many things can give a false positive, they know this. Even the lab leaving the urine out for too long can cause a false positive. Also, they can see if your levels are very low. So they would likely ask you if you drank alcohol and would likely do further testing. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I wouldn't worry. You can't, really, or you'll never survive the next few years. It was just a component of the sauce so probably there was actually very little soy sauce in the dish.

First thing you need to do is relax and breath. While it is true that soy sauce may cause a false positive in some people it won't in others. So take a chill and drink lot's of water. When I was in the California Diversion program my peers and I came up with a list of things that we suspected had cause positive ETg screens. Notice I am not calling them false positive because these things actually do contain trace amounts of alcohol. I am reposting the list here. Understand it is largely anecdotal but you or others may find it helpful.
Please note that we all found we had eaten or used one of these products within 3 days prior to a test.
Generally speaking you want to avoid all processed foods such as salsa's, sauces, fermented soy products like miso and soy sauce. Bar-B-Q sauce. Avoid restaurants that uses a lot of sauces or gravies. A list of restaurants that people have associated with positive tests are.
Italian
Mexican
Japanese
Sushi
Pollo Loco
Specific products to avoid using at all are:
PAM cooking spray 86% grain alcohol
Listerine
Fabreeze
Hair spray
I will post a link in few minutes to a site that lists products with alcohol.
As for food you best bet is to get used to eating at home - cook fresh food, meats and veggies from the produce department - make you own sauces.
For household and industrial products that contain alcohol or alcohol metabolites go to this link and put alcohol or ETOH in the search field.
There is no way you can avoid all exposure so you can only do your best and turn it over to your higher power.
