Help me choose a shift please! Time sensitive..

Published

Which job/shift would allow me to have more time with my young kids (2 year old and infant). M-F 8-5 no weekends or holidays (epidemiology position) OR a 2 week rotation, 40 hour work week, rotating weekends on/off (corrections position)

Mon 0030-0630,Tue/Wed/Sat 1830-0630

Sun 1830-0630, Mon 1830-0030, Thu/Fri 1830-0630

I was told the night (corrections) rotation would be bad because I’d be sleep all the time and the kids would never see me but I feel like that way about the M-F schedule especially when you add in rush hour traffic time. Help please!!

WHY would you leave the work from home position? I can see where you would need to bring in day care, but you would have a limited availability for the kids.

WHY is your heart in corrections? Correction nursing adds an additional level of stress . anxiety and documentation. Even with security... I was concerned for my safety.

Working at home is not all it’s cracked up to be like people think. One of the problems with WAH is that I’m ALWAYS at home. Been doing it for two years now and I’m over it. Plus I want to be eligible for the public service loan forgiveness and can’t do that working at a for profit company. Even being at home I hate staring at a computer all day and being on the phone with patients who could care less about their health and curse me out for simply dialing their number.

I want to provide direct care but I also have a no *** personality and I hate the direction that our healthcare system has taken (patient satisfaction over quality care, “customer is always right” mindset, no repercussions for pt actions, etc) which is why I’ve been interested in corrections for so long. I actually just finished my first week of training at a prison for a prn position and the inmates were way more respectful than the patients I deal with daily.

I'm glad you encountered some respectful prisoners but for the most part you're not going to see a big improvement over the clientele you have now. If you want to switch to corrections (and its wonky shiftwork) in order to work with motivated, polite people, think again.

These people have 24 hours a day to think up things they want and pretexts for their next lawsuit. "Polite" inmates might actually be polite, or might be grooming you to be their next sucker. Before you even entertain the idea of working in corrections, get a copy of the book "Games Criminals Play (and how you can benefit from knowing them)".

Not only would their schedule be problematic, but it would be a hard job to leave at the door and go home to your kids. The epidemiology job will require a lot less emotional energy.

Thanks, I’ve seen that book mentioned in a corrections forum before, I’ll grab a copy. Do you have any thoughts on county corrections working intake vs. outpatient clinic?

As of right now, I doubt I’ll be taking the epidemiology position. I calculated and the pay is just too low. After pension, benefits, and taxes my take home would be about $1500 per pay period. Not worth it when you add on 2+ hours of sitting in traffic daily. I’ll have to probably stalk the county website for the rare chance than another RN position pops up.

Have worked from home for many years, so I get that. Thought your main goal was time with the kiddos.

See that there are other variables , like the loan forgiveness.

Best of luck with your decision.

As I read comments of other and your response--you are looking for a well paying, fits my life job--well nursing isn't it and probably there is not any job out there to meet your expectations--sorry--all jobs have downfalls--you have to adjust or you will be miserable and job hunting every two years--Just my opinion

Nursing is one of the most well rounded, diverse professions out there so I definitely don’t agree with your statement.
