HELP, ADVICE... anything on getting a job for a New Graduate RN!!!!

Published

Hello everyone,

I graduated from Northern VA Community College in May 2009, passed the NCLEX-RN in December 2009 (I waited so long to take it b/c I had that option) and now I am looking for a job and cannot find one. I live in the Manassas/Gainesville/Haymarket area so I have been looking at Prince William hospital, Fauquier Hospital, Potomac hospital and INOVA hospitals websites and cannot find anything for new graduates. :uhoh3: I contacted the human resources offices for all the hospitals through email/calls and Potomac hospital says they are not hiring new grads, INOVA says to check the website, Prince William says to check their website and Fauquier says to check their website.

Everyone keeps saying you have to go to the human resource office in person but I do not have an appointment, so I am turned away every time. Home health care agencies say I do not have any experience b/c I was not a practicing LPN before so they will not hire me.

It is so disheartening :crying2: when you worked so hard through nursing school and you graduate :), then you have to study for hard for the NCLEX and you pass :) and then you think the hardship is over and you look for a job and keep getting turned away! I feel so discouraged b/c I feel all the hard work, determination has lead me to this point and now I can not get a job! I mean, the reason why I went through all of that was to be a nurse and now I am a nurse, I can not find a job! :crying2:

I need a job really bad; can anyone give me advice, point me in a direction, give me some encouraging words, any thing???? PLEASE!!!

Specializes in Tele, ICU, ED, Nurse Instructor,.

I work for an HCA hospital. My old unit just a hired a new grad. So there are jobs out there. They may not be the jobs the want but just get your foot in the door. That is why I tell nursing student if you are in school at least work as a pct or nursing assistant prn two to four days a month to have your foot in the door. So when it is time for to grad and look for a job the chances will be much higher. I know some ppl dont have to work but just to get your foot in the door you would have to do what you have to do.

Another FYI...I live in WV and drive 1 hour to get to Winchester..It's not that bad.

Can you give me some more information about the department you work at? I am a new grad RN and cant find anything! I have put two applications in for your hospital and am just waiting!!!! :uhoh3:

I work on GI. When did you apply to the positions, recently? They just posted about 10 or so positions for a new unit that will be opening.

I applied for the surgical care unit and also for some unit called express admit. I have heard good things about this hospital. I really want a call or something??? I am losing HOPE. I was so desperate for a job, that I took a job as a bank teller. very, very sad!!! :crying2:

Oh okay. The Express Admit unit jobs were just posted. That will be a brand new unit, it hasn't even opened yet. We in in the process of expanding again, and it is one of new units that has been created under our expansion.

I have been there for 2 1/2 years, and I personally love it. I have no regrets about working there. And the hospital itself if very good. I would recommend it to anyone. Are you from the Winchester area or WV?

I live in Herndon, VA. It would be an hour drive for me but, for a good hospital, I am willing to drive there with a smile on my face! :yeah: I feel as though because I didn't go to school in VA, I am at a huge disadvantage!!!! Do you know the name of someone I could possibly call and talk to personally?

@ 2btraumarn2008 i was wondering if you could give me some advice? i live in stephens city and i plan on applying to lfcc's nursing program next year. i'm working on my prereqs now and will be taking the cna course through inova next month at loudoun rehab. what's the atmosphere for cnas at wmc?

i have been trying to get a foot in the door there even if it's an office support position with no luck...any advice? i'm making a career change from accounting and i have zero healthcare experience. i'm planning on volunteering there so i can get at least some experience to put on my resume. any suggestions would be helpful
