HELP, ADVICE... anything on getting a job for a New Graduate RN!!!!

Published

Hello everyone,

I graduated from Northern VA Community College in May 2009, passed the NCLEX-RN in December 2009 (I waited so long to take it b/c I had that option) and now I am looking for a job and cannot find one. I live in the Manassas/Gainesville/Haymarket area so I have been looking at Prince William hospital, Fauquier Hospital, Potomac hospital and INOVA hospitals websites and cannot find anything for new graduates. :uhoh3: I contacted the human resources offices for all the hospitals through email/calls and Potomac hospital says they are not hiring new grads, INOVA says to check the website, Prince William says to check their website and Fauquier says to check their website.

Everyone keeps saying you have to go to the human resource office in person but I do not have an appointment, so I am turned away every time. Home health care agencies say I do not have any experience b/c I was not a practicing LPN before so they will not hire me.

It is so disheartening :crying2: when you worked so hard through nursing school and you graduate :), then you have to study for hard for the NCLEX and you pass :) and then you think the hardship is over and you look for a job and keep getting turned away! I feel so discouraged b/c I feel all the hard work, determination has lead me to this point and now I can not get a job! I mean, the reason why I went through all of that was to be a nurse and now I am a nurse, I can not find a job! :crying2:

I need a job really bad; can anyone give me advice, point me in a direction, give me some encouraging words, any thing???? PLEASE!!!

Looking for an update on the OP's job status.

I just started looking within the last week and am so discouraged at the prospects for new grads.

Any recommendations?

Just give it more time. There are certainly jobs to be had and there are new openings around here all the time. However, there are also a lot of applicants to compete with. Expect to spend at least a month job hunting *aggressively* before you land a position.

Hi everyone, I am also a new grad with the hardest time finding a job. I live in NJ but have NY license. I truly thought by now I would be working. I graduated in May and am starting to feel discouraged. Anyone from the north have any info or advice for me. Thank you

You might find more information if you post in the state forums more local to you, like the NJ or NY forums. Unless you're planning on moving to Virginia, of course! :) Good luck.

JLFOREVER......I was wondering which LTC facility you work at. I am in the same boat. I have been applying to all hospitals in Richmond with no luck to get hired as a new RN. I want to take your advice on going to an LTC facility but I am a little weiry on applying to just any of them since I don't know any places personally. It sounds like you like where you work and want to know if they are hiring for a new RN now. If so please let me know asap! I am highly interested. Thanks in advance!

A little update on me! Still no job :sniff: not even an interview  I have widened my search to hospitals about an hour away. I have tried all the long term care facilities around me and beyond but no one is hiring new graduates at this time. Hopefully, with graduation season coming along - more new grad positions will start to open up! Keeping my head up!

I actually work in Winchester, and I must say I am happy...I know for a fact that my dept. hires new grads all the time....it's a nice floor to start out on. Send me a message if you want more details.

Another FYI...I live in WV and drive 1 hour to get to Winchester..It's not that bad.

thank you for the advice, I will try that.

2bTraumaRN2008,

I have been trying to send you a private message but found out that b/c I am a new member that I do not have the capability. I have applied to the hospital in Front Royal and have not received a response. I will apply to the hospital in Winchester. For now, I am hoping to get a job before summer rolls around. I am going to a Career Fair for nurses (graduate nurses welcome) next month in Maryland. I have looked into Children's Hospital in DC and they have a lot of openings for new nurses however, I would have to apply for a DC license which costs around $200-something. I apply/check for openings every day at Fauquier hospital, Prince William, INOVA and Children's Hospital but nothing yet. Thank you so much for the info!

I just sent you a private message/email...check it and let me know if you recd it.

This is a scary thread. As a new nursing student, I really hope that the job prospects get better for new grads in the next couple of years.

My search has been interesting. It turns out that the census has been so low in certain areas at Fairfax Hospital that some nurses had their shifts cut. Some area hospitals (all in DC or Maryland) have posted for new grads and I did get a call from Children's Hospital this week; however, I had already given up on the hospitals and accepted a job at a nursing home and will be starting next week.

Hopefully the economy will start picking up and there will be more options for new grads - in the meantime, I will be gaining skills.
