Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say I found this site and think it's a great site. Allowing a place for nurses to come and explore topics is a great idea! I am a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, practising in my home province of Manitoba. A recent debate had me surfing on google for an answer that I hope someone can answer;

The question: Where can a RPN work in the US? Does anyone know of RPN's that have moved to the US and work as their designation? Amongst my colleagues, there is great debate as to which states allow RPNs to register and work.

Thanks a lot everyone and nice to meet you all :)

I'm not sure what exactly is and RPN. Good luck.

Welcome to allnurses.com! I moved your post for more responses. Hope you get some answers.

Hi, Ryan and wellcome to allnurses!

I'm an pshychiatric RPN in Ontario, and I'm doing some research same as you, thinking to move to the States. I don't know anyoane, but I can tell you how you can find an answer to your question. If you go to the Bord Of Nursing to the state you are willing to go and search job market for LPN in US is RPN in CA,than call some hospitals and you will see the chances we have. Did you thought about what state you want to go? that wiil be a first. Throughout my researchs on web sites and Jobmonster, I saw that some fiels such as Pshych, nursing home, community health care, LT care, require LPN.

GOOD LUCK, and let me know if you find an LPN relocated to states.

Val

Hi, just to let you know, RPN (registered Practical Nurse) in Canada, equivalent to LPN in USA

Specializes in Psychiatry.

I've heard that some states will take RPNs for what education we have and allow us to work as RPNs in the mental health field. I remember being in school, and hving a recruiter from Cali come and give us info for relocating there. I know that we can work in Ca. I also have heard that we have reciprocity in Hawaii, New Mexico, and Arizona. I have checked all the state boards, but only (2) have any info about Canadian nurses, whatsoever. Hoping that someone has some more definitive answers. :) Thanks for your replies :)

I have lots of friends RN left for CA, they are doing wonderful. I heard lots of good news re:CA receptable to RN's and RPN's, but the cost of living went up a lot. Lots of californians moved to Nevada or Arizona, because of this issue. You've got to be real reach to live there those days. Sorry I coudn't help more.... but be careful with Hhawaii, not to friendly to incomers, if you know what I mean...!

Take care,& good luck. I'm thinking AZ to relocate.

PS: let me know what you decide.

Hi there,

I am a new graduate RN....do hospitals hire new psych nurses that do not have the psych course yet? I live in Ontario and would like to pursue a psych course.

Thanks
