Heard some experiences from GCC.......

I hate to post things like this but, I feel I should since I have now heard this from two totally separate nursing students. I have met two students in or that have graduated fro the R.N program at GCC. Both have told me that this particular program is one they would NOT recommend to anyone. It was emotionally and mentally draining. Not from the studies but from instructors and such. They said things like they seemed to want to trick their students and confuse them. I know this sounds crazy! One of the ladies told me they had attended a program through one of the hospitals for the first year and it was great. Then went to GCC to complete it. The other gal told me they had originally started with 40 students but by third month 20 had dropped out. Also in their experiences with other students in other programs, the other nuring students did NOT feel the same way as they did with their program at GCC.

Now why would this be? Two completely different people I have met in two separate semesters with the same experience? This worries me, not because I plan on attending GCC but just in general. I know we all should expect school to be mentally and even physically draining. But I would hope we wouldnt be getting this way because of our instructors........I dunno.

Maybe these were two "Bad apples"?

GCC = Glendale CC?????

eta: And if that's the case, what kind of program were they in? GCC's offerings include a 26-month P/T evening hybrid program and a 24-month weekend day program, in addition to the traditional program.

I wonder if they were in one of those -- maybe the hybrid class -- and it just wasn't right for them and/or the kinks weren't worked out.

that is kinda scary.. gcc was one of my choices.. was it for the traditonal program or what? thanks.

well my friend who is attending the asu nursing program said... her friend that attends scc nursing program..apprently says its not well organized and its horrible enviorment of people... well i guess..at least one person everywhere has something negative to say..cant please everyone..... at this point ill accept any maricopia cc school that accepts me lol yup.. no doubt about that

You know, I've met several people who think that the school that I went to was no good, and who say that the teachers were 'out to get them'. Or I've also heard students say that the tests were written poorly, as if the instructors were dumb or something.

I had a wonderful time at my school. I found the questions ok, if not a little too easy. Sometimes, I'd get frustrated, because I'd think that they (the instructors) weren't hard enough on the students. But that's just my opinion.

My point is, Nursing school is what you make it. Some people make excuses, and some people make it a wonderful oppontunity. Take from it what you will.....

I'm currently in the weekend program at Glendale CC. I'm in block 2. We have had some problems with classrooms and the testing center, but all in all I've loved it so far. The instructors have been more than helpful and really do care about the students. I know block 3 gets a little harder and I've been warned about it, but from what I've heard it's mostly that you REALLY need to know your stuff. That's actually a good thing. I've been told that you're now doing RN level work rather than LPN level work, so a lot more is required of you.

I think every school has it's problems. Either way, nursing school is stressful and a lot of work, but it is what you make of it also.

Please clarify; do you mean Glendale or Gateway Community College?

Glendale......I have never heard of Gateway referred to as GCC...sorry if I confused you......

I completed the Glendale RN program one year ago. I was in the full time program. Yes, many people flunk out.....but if I could it, then so can you. They weed out students clear through block 4.

I can only say that school was tough at Glendale, but the real world of nursing is much tougher. There is one particularly strict instructor which I believe you are hearing about. I saw her at my hospital last week and thanked her for being so tough. That prepared me for the real world.

Go into the part time program, not the full time. You will thank your lucky stars you did. The evil instructor(s) you are hearing about are likely in the FT program, just guessing...

Others have taken my advice and were not dissapointed.:D

Very, very wise advice. If people spent more time studying and less time gossiping, the nursing school experience would be remarkably less traumatic. While every school is bound to have one "evil" instructor, as a whole, I have found nursing school instructors to be some of the nicest, most easy-going, and giving bunch around. No one is looking to fail anyone. If a test question is poorly written, and that does happen sometimes, they inevitably will hear you out and even reevaluate. I have never had a teacher do that in any of my other degree programs. Generally, if you show up where/when you are supposed to, do the assigned work, and behave in a reasonably professional manner, nursing school is not that tough.

I second the opinion above that a lot of the instructors are too easy.

Avoid the gossips and troublemakers. They will make themselves abundantly apparent in the first few weeks.
