heard of Excelsior College? need advice

Nursing Students General Students

hi all,

i am going into my last semester of nursing school ... thus grad in May. problem is the instructor does not want me to grad ... I know this because she is ugly to me. Plus, another instructor (that i am friends with) told me that she is going to TRY to fail me. well if an instructor wants you to fail then, of course, you WILL fail. This is so unprofessional and frankly, I cannot take any more of the 'o my God am I going to fail' . So I need advice on: SHOULD I TRANSFER? STAY AND TRANSFER IF I FAIL? Does any one go to Excelsior College or know any thing about this school? Thanks to all that reply. It is nice to know I have my on-line family here at allnurses.com

You nailed it perfectly, RN34TX.

I'm sorry to hear about your circumstances. Unfortunately, I did fail my last semester by 4 points and I'm still in my Kubler Ross Death and Dying phase. I start school in two weeks for my second semester. I'm very upset and I feel so stupid.

Is it just me, or have others noted that nursing instruction seems to attract some seriously neurotic, downright WEIRD types (esp. women)? Now I do know some really cool people who teach and are great at it, but come on!

Uh oh...my career goal is to teach. :chuckle:

What I would have done, would be to sitdown with the instructor during office hours and discuss my performance and see what areas if any, I needed to improve on. What I have learned from professors, even if you think you doing great, if you think they are going to fail you, it does not hurt to ask them for advice. It is just a way to make them feel important and you as the students are relying on them for answers. Usually if you sitdown with the instructor, you can sort out all the misunderstandings before it is too late.

Me too!! What can I say?

I agree with Leda, I would question your "friend" who gave you this information. The other instructor may have made a simple comment which your "friend" interpreted as she doesn't like you and is going to fail you. I would agree that if the instructor actually said something like: "I don't like this person, I'm going to fail them," then that would be unprofessional, but since there is no concrete evidence of that, I would have to comment that what is even more unprofessional, in my opinion, is being "friends" with an instructor. Even if you were friends before you started school, I think it is pretty unprofessional to maintain a friendship where you even discuss such things and wonder if your program has policies about such things. There is a student in my class who is friends with one of our instructors quite openly. The rest of us think it's highly inappropriate and admittedly gossip about her and the fact that her grades are higher since her friend became our instructor. What you heard may not have been direct information at all but some gossip inspired by your relationship with an instructor. I'm sorry if that sounds overly harsh, but as you can tell, I have personal experience with a classmate who may be in a position similar to yours, and I resent her friendship with that instructor simply because it has raised questions as to whether she's getting help that the rest of us aren't. In any event, I think you should probably stick it out because I doubt you know with 100% certainty that she is going to fail you and you probably can't begin another program this semester anyway (a bit late).

Unless that particular CI has walked up to you and said "I hate you, you are going to fail my clinical" everything you are hearing is gossip and hearsay despite the fact that your "friend" has said it to be true. I find it rather unprofessional on your "friends" part to have even repeated said information to you anyway because she is also a CI.

If you truely think there is an issue with this CI, sit down, talk to him/her and work this out. Or, you could just stick it out, do your best and hope for the best like everyone else in NS.

But to answer your original question, I wouldn't transfer out your final semester. You have 4 months to go. If for whatever reason you fail...then take action from there. But don't put the cart before the horse per se.

I wish you luck!!!

Hi all,

Forgive me if this question has been beaten to death: I am beginning my Excelsior program. Am I correct in understanding that I can get the books and study guides directly from Excelsior and test/clep out locally prior to actually enrolling with Excelsior? I have read something like that here on the board. I seem to understand that if you enroll immediately, you have to re-enroll every year?

Correct- you can do your CLEPs if you need them, and NC 1 & 2 prior to enrolling. Now, the wait time for the CPNE (clinical exam) can be pretty long, and you can take it once you finish all the NCs and are within 9 credit hours of finishing your general eds- so you might want to save some of those gen eds, and study for them while waiting on your CPNE date- that'll cut down on some of your time as well.

Hi There, I was just reading your post and I was just posting something similar to your situation but not the same. You see, I like you, have only one semester left in a 2 year program, but, unfortunately, I failed my OB/Maternal Rotation by 3 points and it is so discouraging, and Am Seriously thinking about finishing up with Excelsior College, and was wondering if anyone also knew anything about them, but haven't heard much, I think you are at an advantage, however, because you are still in the program, so Do try to make a go of it!! I wish you a lot of luck!!, Just believe in yourself, know the good differences you make in people's lives, and project that!! And Make it Happen!! This is a great website, I'm glad I've found it, I just found it yesterday, and I'm hoping this will pick me up out of my rut that I've been left in since I found out I wasn't going onto my final semester!! Anyway, It is emotionally painful!! Take Care, My best to You!!:)

Just to clearify,

I get the impression by what you are saying that the tests are given online by Excelsior? In regards to 'clepping', what will I actually need to clep out of as I am starting from scratch.

Thanks in advance!

Scott
