Health Insurance

Published

I start nursing school in fall 2011. Having health insurance is one of the requirements for entry into the program. I have insurance through my dads place of employment but it is not as it could be. I also understand I can get insurance through the university. I was wondering what other insurance plans are out there. Also, what insurance did/do you have in school, how much was it, what coverage it has, deductibles, etc? Links would be great! thanks so much for the help!

You can contact your state department of insurance for a list of companies that provide individual coverage in your state and compare plans. This information is probably available on a website. Applying for individual coverage and gaining acceptance can take a month or two, so if this is your choice, don't let it go until the last minute. Your university's plan or your dad's plan will probably be less expensive, as individual policies can be pricey.

Plan availability varies from state to state, since current federal law does not allow individual plans to be sold across state lines, so asking AN posters for their plan specifics will probably not be helpful.

I have insurance through my university for $800/semester. Most visits at the university clinic are free, or otherwise they will pay 80% for in-network visits, 60% out of network. Deductible is $100. Also, there are discounts for eye and dental visits. In most cases, university insurance will be cheaper than individual insurance plans.

Check out the big insurance company websites. Blue cross/shield, United health care, Cigna, etc. google their name with 'individual' then work out a quote from there.

If you just need insurance for the sake of the program, get a high deductable plan. those are generally good for major events. For minor events, go to a clinic with cash.

Your father's insurance is probably going to be better than anything you can get on your own. Most school insurances seem on the surface to pay well for most things, but if you look closely you will find they have a pretty low lifetime limit, sometimes as low as only $1000! And it isn't cheap.

We are paying for COBRA coverage right now since my husband got laid off. It costs us a whopping $1000 per month.

Thank God my school doesn't have this requirement... yet. If they did, I guess I'd be SOL because I would not be able to afford it. The university where I attended for my first degree did require us to have insurance but they also provided it. So, that wasn't too bad.

I seriously doubt you can find an affordable price that will come out better in the long run than your fathers. I would LOVE to be on my dad's insurance!

You should get some quotes on individual plans - that sounds excessive. I have an individual plan with maternity form Blue Cross and its only $270/mo. ($2,500 hospital deductible, $30 office visits)
