Health Care is a right

I would do a poll on this, but I do not know how to - or maybe you need to be a premium member.

At any rate, I would like to hear some discussion on whether you feel health care is a right or not.

I personally do.

Apparently you didn't notice that the person you are responding to is in fact, a nurse from the UK.

And? What difference does that make to the discussion?

No country exists and I never made the assertion. You did however, make the assertion that if our government were to implement a Universal Health care policy and provide a strong social safety net (like many other countries) that people would simply "retire" and stop contributing. There is no evidence for that whatsoever.

There is. I would and I believe many others would. Why wouldn't they?

I never said that either.

Yes, we do have a history of discrimination, thank your for admitting it is not a "conspiracy theory". What do the English have to do with this?

I disagree. Universal health care isn't going to solve everything, and your assumption that it would is ridiculous.

However, we do spend a lot of money on health care (much more than any other country) and our health outcomes are comparable to Canada's (for example). In other words, Canada does it for far less and delivers comparable care.

So 47 million people should move to Canada. That would solve the problem. We spend alot of money on alot of things. I don't for one minute believe or know that Canada's health care is comparable to ours.

Because there are existing models (via other industrialized countries) that demonstrate otherwise. These countries aren't full of dead beats sittings on the asses all day, yet many of them have strong social safety nets.

A cartoon?

If that is true, and "theres really no reason for anyone to do anything", then why do people in Europe, parts of Asia and Australia get up every day and work? Why don't they all just lay around and sip Martinis?

They're not Americans. We are talking about Americans. And the only person I"ve ever seen sitting on the street complaining about health care was in SYDNEY AUSTRALIA.

ummm....

Because you asked a nurse from the United Kingdom, if she would get a blood transfusion in her own country.

No, why should they uninsured leave their own country? The idea is to improve the country, not abandon it. The realization that health care is a basic human right is a step in the right direction.

Canada's health care system is comparable.

Then I have a suggestion for you. MOVE. I'd pay for several others to move too.:yeah:We are Americans. We aren't Australians, Europeans etc. We didn't want big government. And many of the countries you are mentioning have private insurance because they don't get everything they need from their government either. So they have to go to work to purchase supplemental healthcare insurance.

We aren't gonna get universal healthcare either. We are gonna be required to purchase the same thing we have now. Except we are gonna HAVE to buy insurance. And it's gonna be basic healthcare. It's not the healthcare insurance that's at fault here. It's the profits most of us want. Those of us who have big pharma, hospital corps, and insurance stocks in our 401k's. etc.

Are you aware that most nurses can't make a living in some of these countries. That France pays for medical school . Should we pay for Medical school here?

:lol2:

Thanks. I guess that settles it then. I'm sure the Aussies are eager to adopt a US style health care system.

Because we aren't gonna get all of our care paid for. We are gonna be required to buy healthcare insurance. And it's gonna be basic care. For several million this isn't their own country. Why should a Somali citizen get a transplant before an American? Why should a Somali citizen just jet off to Norway on vacation and yet gets HD 3 times a week in this country. Paid for by Medicare. For every instance you can cite I can cite just the opposite.

Well I've yet to see anyone in the USA lying in the street dying solely because they don't have access to healthcare. A county, read government run, hospital in Cali did put a patient out on the street in her night gown though. A government run hospital in the USA.

No need to get personal. I'm not moving. This is my country. I've buried family here. I love this country. I'm staying.

I want smart government, and whether you want to admit many Americans want the government to take a larger role in social affairs (health care.. etc..). I understand some people are fearful of big government, ultimately we are all going to have to compromise.

I understand there is a role for private insurers in other countries, in many countries it's a small role and it's heavily regulated.

The results of health care reform aren't known, because nothing has been implemented yet. The health care industry certainly has a hand to play in parts of the blame, as well as big pharma and hospital corp.

You say that most nurses, "can't make a living" in some of these other countries, I'd like for you to offer evidence, if you don't mind.

Education is a right, that should answer your medical school question.
