health assessment male instructor - uncomfortable w/ him

Nursing Students General Students

Hi guys, I am new here and hope to have fun and learn with you all. I am in my second year of nursing here in Canada. I am taking health assessment this term, and we have to attend lecture and lab classes. Our instructor is a 50 year old guy nurse who is making us, the female students, here uncomfortable with his comments.

We have to take be partially undressed during his lab classes and we just don't feel comfortable with him touching us. There is only one male student in our class and the rest of us are all women, some married, some single. But he makes the most intriguing comments and has mentioned that we shouldn't be shy because he eventually will have to see us wearing bra and underwear. We can wear a hospital dress, but still...

Did you guys go through this? This instructor is scary looking and is too weird.

Anyway, I am looking forward to hear your experiences with your health assessment classes.

Thanks and have a great week.

I'm not yet in nursing school, but that just seems weird. I know that in my school, women and men (including instructors) are separated whenever any clothes need to come off. Is there a female instructor that could do this part of the class, you know, if enough students complained? Good luck. I hope it goes well for you.

This is what my physician said, that when she went to medical school, they had two instructors (male and female), but here we have no option. He is nice at times, but can also be arrogant in class. When we were learning to find all the pulses, he attempt to find my femoral pulse and touched me, so I felt quite uncomfortable with hands.

I know we are all there to learn, but WHY have a male instructor that doesn't build rapport with us, even though he says that nurses should build trust and rapport with their patients?

Thanks for replying

Ugh. I am a man and that seems creepy. But the guy is old school, so who knows.

That is something that would make me very uncomfortable. Is there someone at the school you can trust and talk to. He has NO need to find your femoral pulse- he is not in training- so indeed knows how to find pulses. It is inappropriate behavior on the part of the instructor.

There is no reason for the instructor to touch you...we went through just fine not being touched by the instructor.

The only time he should need to see anything remotely close to in yur, underwear is during leb checkoff, which is a time when you are graded for MAINTAINING the pt privacy (keep em' covered).

If he's laying hands on students, or convincing you he needs to see students in their underwear, I would definitely talk to someone in charge.

Health assessment is a physical class, student to student. And it is your responsibility to ensure your patient's sense of privacy. Verbally this person is crossing the line. You have a choice report him to your department head or be quiet. If you choices to report him, make sure your peers back you up.

Hi guys, thanks for replying and sorry for the English mistakes in my previous postings.. I was so tired. Anyway, I believe that most girls in my class feel the same way, but I am sure some of them won't back me up because they are scared of what might happen to them. I am in my early 30's, married, already have a segree, and I am more then willing to talk about this issue with the administration. This guy eventually calls students to the corner and mention stuff to them.

He called a 44 year old woman in my class to the corner and told her "you are approaching menopause, do you know?" "have you got arthritis in your hands?", etc... He also said to the other 20 year old girl who feels totally uncomfortable with him "you have all the symptoms of someone that has been sexually abused"... c'mon... I think he is definitely crossing the line! He may mean well, but he is freaking us out. I was wearing a top the other day in the lab class under my hospital dress and when he noticed that I didn't take it off, he made such a big issue and mentioned to the other girls that he thought I was less conservative. What is wrong with this man??

For our own sake I should talk to someone at college about this. My othr female instructors seem to be friends with this man, so I am thinking about talking to the counsellor first. Thank you so much folks for your imput. It was good to vent.

Have a great week.

Your instructor's a creep.

the only 'touching' that i remember in nursing school was checking each other's vital signs. maybe lung sounds (don't even recall). but whatever it was, the clothes stayed on. yikes!!

He sounds very creepy to me, and I would definitely go talk to someone at the college about it. I only had one class that required any clothing being removed and that was EKG and to make us feel more comfortable we were allowed to wear sports bras on those lab days. We had a female instructor and she did everything possible to encourage privacy. We were put in groups of 3 and put behind a curtain area to do our practicing. The men were separated from the women during these times. It's uncomfortable enough in that situation let alone having a creepy instructor like yours!

Sounds like a "Chester the Molester" type to me. What a creep. I certianly would report him.
