What Ive noticed...
Wow. At the CC where i am, a "B" is a borderline disaster if you want nursing. There are too many people that just don't get them. A "C" in one of the core sciences might as well be an F.

The bully strikes again
Raindrop, Not a nurse yet but in my current job I ran afoul of an individual that would curse at me and others, told us we were stupid and any time you approached this person for him to do his job, he would berate you. One day I went to his office and we had a very primitive and unenlightened conversation. He still behaves the same way but I am no longer included in his group of targets. If the management won't handle it, you may need to give that person some seriously tough talk. And please never stop whistling.

Of course there are plenty of things that I believe the government should stay out of. To expound on these would be to hijack this thread. I have shared plenty of my opinions about what the government should and should not do during my tenure on this board. Lots of the regulars can back me up on this! Should I choose to expound further, I will be sure to post a new thread. Interesting. What I will say is that you are on a slippery slope. This country has entered an era of arbitrarily enforcing the will of a voting plurality on the entire population. This smoking issue is one small thing. It will snowball. Liberals and conservatives alike are on the side of legislating every aspect of human behavior. I will be around this board for a while so maybe we will get to debate other such incursions into the area of personal freedom and responsibility. And I bet THE MAN will make inroads into something you care about, too. The reason i am adamant about this issue is because when you give an inch they take a mile. One day people will be forced to do something that is truly bizarre and unreasonable and it will be justified in the same way this smoking ban foolishness is justified.

Ok mercy, I have a question, Is there anything you think the government should leave alone? To put it another way, should THE MAN pass a law to deal with everything that a large enough group finds distasteful? Are there any areas that should be left to personal choice and responsibility? And what do you think of the idea of the government making inroads into the areas you think belong in the realm of the private citizen?

And what about the people who work in these establishments? Is there some reason they shouldn't be covered by OSHA protections? Are they meant to choose between making a living and not being exposed to a toxin that may make them cause them discomfort, asthma, allergies, or even worse, die a horrible death? We've had a smoking ban in bars for years in this state, and guess what? People get used to it. Just as we choose to do most everything else we do in life, I imagine people choose those jobs. That really is an appalling argument because these bans do cuase some bars to go under so please don't act as though you care about those workers since many of them find themsleves out of work after these bans and business owners lose their businesses after these bans. The small neighborhood joints get killed by this foolishness. And no little children hang out at these spots. Ah, yes, you have the right to do whatever you please on your property, with the proviso that you have put into your own post... as long as it's not against the law. If smoking in public places is illegal where you live, how do you figure that you can smoke there just because you happen to own the place? Do you believe yourself to be free to commit other crimes there, too? Smoking is not illegal. It would be better if they just outlawed smoking. That would be different. The bans state you cannot use a legal substance on your property.

Any other "second career" students out there?
I'm 36 and have been in IT for 10 years, i think. Last few have been moderately unpleasant. My mom is a CNM and suggested i do nursing long ago and i decided to look into it. I am still in IT but i am taking my pre-reqs and hope to get in sometime in '06. Looks like there is a pretty serious "over 30" crowd. That's great.

Personal responsibility is one thing. You have total control over what you choose to eat. Big Macs don't permeate the air. Cigarette smoke does. It isn't a valid comparison. As far as choosing where one goes, that is also easier said than done. We all have to attend functions that we don't schedule ourselves, and so do our children. I am curious. What places are there that are full of kids and allow smoking? restuarants are the only places i could think of that might be a problem. The kiddies should not be going to bars. As a person who chooses not to smoke, I feel that I am not the one who should be limited in my restaurant choices. It is not good enough to simply "not go to an establishment that allows smoking". I should have the right to go anywhere I want without having to inhale someone else's nasty habit. Since it is the smoker who chooses to pollute their own lungs with a carcinogen then it is they who need to be limited in their choice of establishment and not the other way around. I do expect the government to enforce my right to fresh air. Why do you feel that way about your restaurant choices? Do you own those places? Did you take the risk of starting those businesses? No need to answer. Also, I don't know why you feel you have the right to go on private property not owned by you and not have to deal with anything that you don't like. And why do you expect the government to enforce your right to comfort in private places owned by others rather than enforcing the freedom of people to do what they will with their money and their businesses? I am sure smoking is already banned in your workplace and in the mall and the grocery store. BTW, I don't smoke and I stay out of cigar bars because i can't handle it. Not trying to get them shut down, though.

It's nice to see that people can save money and apply for loans to open a business, then pay taxes on said business only to have people that will likely never use their business push for legislation that tells them how they can run their business. High comedy. One day we are going to start having problems if we try to have legislation that applies to every single possible human behavior or action. Like many people, I tend to avoid places where I am uncomfortable and most places that allow smoking are places that no one is forced to go.

Human Anatomy and Microbiology at the same time...
All matters on the teacher you get, I think. If you get two hard core no (A's) in my class teachers at the same time, then your doomed to take bolth at once. Yeah, i think you are right about that. My anatomy teacher seems to be a bit like that. people are getting killed. But Micro is more reasonable so i don't get abused, in terms of workload on that one. Studying in snippets, like that other poster said, has really done me right. Even if i am sitting at a bar drinking a beer or two, i have those cards with me and go through them.

3 weeks into nsg program, he wants to quit...
I am a 36yrold former bonehead who is the son of a CNM. She suggested I try nursing way back when. Well, I got out of highschool, went to college on acedemica scholarship and pronptly lost that. Went and fought forest fires for a whle, came back to school and got suspended for a term to to academics. Cooked in a resturant for a bit, went back to school and flunked out all the way and found myself in the army. Now, at 36, and working full time, i get As. My mom laughs at me and says she wishes i had listened but she is happy that i am getting there, one way or another. One way or another, your kid will do well and be fine.

Human Anatomy and Microbiology at the same time...
I am doing this now, along with a fulltime job. I will have to officially recommend that this not be undertaken. I work 3 or 4 12-15 hour shifts and i go to class on all my off days. Also, anatomy is much more labor intensive than i thought it would be and micro is not exactly a creampuff course. I thought i was a very good student and that this would be pretty easy. I am suitably humbled. Have not had a beer with my friends, ridden my bike or been to yoga since the beginning of the semester. Ok, complaining over. On the good side, i have the best grade so far in both classes and after this semester i will be 1 semester ahead of schedule since i decided to take these clases together. So that is definitely a good thing.

help! to follow my heart or not???
i can't tell you what to do but i follwed the path of least resistance and higher dollars. that basically has led me here. now i am 36, bitter and working 50-70 hours a week while taking my pre-reqs to get into nursing school. my life sux but i have to do what i have to do to get my life back on track. shoulda listened to mom when she said i'd make a good ER nurse. think about it carefully because to backtrack to do what you really want to do may have a high price.

Is my schedule doable?
You will be fine. Just don't goof off. Consider partying and lounging around a thing of the past and future. You will likely get As and not even feel streesed by the load.

Is anyone else SCARED, after reading some posts from 1st years?
Experience tells me that things are never as bad as other people tell you they will be. Basic training was not as horrible as i was told. Airborne school was not bad at all. Fighting forest fires was not as harrowing as all the stories led me to believe, either. I think that people tell outsiders crazy stories and, as an outsider, you have no way of applying any perspective to their stories. I am sure that difficult times are ahead but nothing that cannot be handled. good luck. (and good luck to me too, since i am not even in nursing school yet).
