Scope of practice concern
I searched the board of nursing and our scope for this one I was curious. I think you need to get futhur explanation on this though. Are you the first person that the pateints sees? and you are admitting them to the psych unit for suspected? until a doctor can assess them? orrrr are you making the actual diagnosis after other people have seen and admitted them. I can understand the suspected diagnosis until the doc can see but anything other than that seems to not be correct. and I would look into it. From what it sounds like is she is trying to talk you into doing it by explaining everyone else does it and the person before you did it, and something is just fishy ... personally I wouldn't take the job. Plus you don't seem excited about it anyway. :)

Are nursing students allowed to give IV push meds?
I went for my RN BSN and I gave IV push meds from the start. I am in pa and had clinicals in de and pa. The only time we weren't allowed to was in our peds rotation but that was the hospitals rules...we couldn't give any IV med. LPNS are not allowed to push IV meds in either state also. I think its because of how dangerous iv push meds are and the side effects that can result from them. And like above it is def not in their scope of practice but that doesn't mean anything at some facilities.. believe me I've seen it with my own eyes!

Commute time?
I drove 2 minutes up the road to school every day lol So I don't have anything to offer here but I wanted to say you shouldn't listen to your lecture tapes lol If they are as boring as my nursing school's classes were you would fall asleep at the wheel lol....especially if your driving so long! haha :chuckle

calling all that failed Nclex...and maybe those that passed :)
Welp, she got her results in the mail, and she failed. She bursted into tears just telling me about it. I didn't know what to do so I just listened to her, and I gave her a bag of m&ms lol. She keeps saying its a minor set back and that she will get over it but I can tell she is so upset! I feel bad thinking it but I am so glad I passed. lol I kept telling her just becasue she failed her boards doesn't make her destined to be a bad nurse, that most nurses either have the good bedside manor or good test taking skills. Who knows...

calling all that failed Nclex...and maybe those that passed :)
Its not often we ask for the advice on those that failed....:chuckle but this is different. I took my RN boards in june and passed with 86 questions, found out in 2 days (my state does not participate in early notification but I verified my license every 5 minutes till one popped up) anyway, my best friend took them on tuesday and there still isn't a license for her. Now granted it may just take a few more days, may they are backed up, and such but she recieved 265 questions (I know the # of questions doesn't mean anything justa little info lol) and she is sure she failed. She told me she was "dying" inside. Anyway the reason for the ever so long post is I don't know what to say to her. I don't want to say its ok, you can take it in a month, but I know if I were her I would feel the same way and it would be a big deal. So can you guys give me a word of advice? We are going out tonight to celebrate her getting her license, and me getting a job :chuckle (I know I waited all summer to get one, I heard enough from my mom and dad about it lol) but it looks like its just for me. What can I say that won't belittle her feelings, but will encourage her? and now I feel like I'm flaunting mine. Thanks for your help.

real bed baths on classmate?
No we did not. We did get in gowns to learn how to do various assessments, however no private areas even came close to being exposed. I would refuse on all counts to do this, although a proper bed bath does not expose a patient if it does it is very little however, I am very surprised to see that this still goes on. This opens the school up to all kinds of sexual harrassment lawsuits, anyway I would express your concern. I am positive that you are not the only one feeling this way!

CPR certification
ok I am kinda nervous saying that I do not have a cpr certification during an interview.....I have one on thursday for st. christophers and I don't now...I def will not get pals but I am still thinking about the BLS lol....has anyone heard anything about the online courses? I found one for 25 bucks...and I don't even have to do the skills part I answer questions and then identify stuff or something....I was thinking about that, that way I wouldn't be wasting money...but something seems so fishy about that lol...and the online course for the aha you have to still go in and do a skills assessment and you have to pay the full price for the class plus the online fee so its not really worth it lol .. sorry just confused and don't feel like sitting for 10 hours lol

car plates
Some people have told me not to get them because they said you are at risk for being sued cause people know you are a nurse or they may fake emergencies and then rape you or something I don't really know lol everyone keeps telling me its a bad idea. lol I gues I am just being silly

Catheter problems
He does have a wound care specialist that was tending to both his colostomy and his bed sore (some nurses didn't think it was important to clean him up everytime he went to the bathroom but that is a whole other story lol) but they said his stoma was concaved and he was using the flat pieces but that was the end of that. As for the wedding tomorrow I'll try the asprin and blue stuff as well as a clean bag! The superpubic cather...can you explain furthur how this works...is this the one that you clamp and then drain so often? if so that would be an excellent idea...then you don't have the infections down there and the constent changing of the catheter which increases bacteria and increased risk for skin breakdown from all the leakage. Good idea...lol oh by the way happy birthday to me!! As of now july 23 I am 22! yay

Spots on lung X-ray
hey guys We went to the doctor yesterday. And there mixed news. The spots are what I thought was going on, the doctor sees lung transplant patient and doens't want to over look anything lol so they send you to your lung doctor. So the lung doctor said that the spots were nothing! I didn't think they were anyhting but in the back of my mind I kept thinking what if...ya know? Anyway to the other news they xray did show that her left lung has decreased blood flow which is a sign of regection, however regection is bilaterally and the right lung is perfectly fine. He sent her up for PFT's and although they are below normal ( 57 ) they are the same as 2 years ago so that is good. He put her on zpac for 30 days (It has a bronchodialator effect as well as the antibiotic) and then he is going to recheck her PFT's hoping that they will go back to her normal which was 68 after transplant. He suspects some sort of chronic regection but like I said it is usually bilaterally decreased but who knows my family seems to be medical mysteries. lol :chuckle I am just concerned because the longest lung transplant patient the doctor has had was 13 years and my mom is at 9 lol and most don't live past 6 years. so she is kinda pushing it. Sorry this post is so long, but its so good to tlak to people that understand. My mom and dad don't talk about their problems anymore (even though they are in the same house lol they are turning out to be worse than my younger brothers lol) and my boyfriend doesn't really understand or know what to say or do and my friends kinda get tired of it after a while which is understandable.

Catheter problems
hey guys Sorry I haven't been back here since I posted my life is sooooooo extremely hectic lol. My dad does need the catheter, he has retention. He is a parapeligic they think some form of MS but they don't know cause its so hard to diagnose. He has spasms but they are his legs that are spasing, I don't think his bladder does, he takes baclofen a lot a day (great medical terms lol) I am not sure the tubing size, I would assume an 18. He does have an infection now and that is the cause of the mucus and sediment but he always has problems with it even without the infection lol. I will tell him to increase his fluids. He drinks probably 2-3 liters of water a day. He also has CHF lol so he is kinda restricted too. As for the colostomy. We are going to a wedding tomorrow and I am just begging God that it doesn't start leaking smells. lol He has the blue drops but they don't seem to help. I will try the asprin along with the drops. The aid is not sticking a pin in it I made sure of that before lol. It gets kinda annoying lol my mom walks around with a can of lysol air freshener and my dad yells that he poop doesn't smell like roses. lol It gets old though. Anyway thanks for all your advice. Iwill try the asprin and the blue liquid at the same time and see what happens.
