:an!: First of all I have to say that I am SO glad that I found this site. I have already killed a couple of hours on topics that interest me and seeing what others say/think.

I am currently a BSN student and took my LPN boards last fall. I currently work both as an agency nurse as well as a position in home health/hospice. I love my job and I love nursing.

I am an Air Force ROTC Cadet scheduled to Commission as a 2nd Lieut in the U.S. Air Force this July after I pass the NCLEX. I received word earlier this week that I will be headed to Lackland, Air Force Base (AFB) in San Antonio in July for my Nurse Transition Program (NTP) and I will then be stationed there for the next 3-4 yrs.

I would love to hear from any Air Force (or other military) nurses, especially those that are currently or have previously been stationed at Lackland, AFB. :usarfrc:

Check out the military forum..

Congratulations on getting your assignment. I haven't been stationed at Lackland/Wilford Hall, so far I have been stationed at Sheppard, Keesler, & now USUHS in Md.

The average time to be stationed at CONUS bases is now 4-4.5 yrs unless you put into go overseas or special duty etc.

Wilford Hall has tons of opportunities for nurses it is probably the best place to get picked up for nurse anesthesia school.

Good Luck with school!

I would like to get into the ICU and then flight nursing. My long term goals include eventually getting my DNP. Do you know anything about getting into flight nursing and/or the extent to which the AF utilizes DNPs?

I think after two years you can apply to go into flight nursing. Talk with your education officer after about a 1.5 and they should fill you in on applying to flight nursing. Alternatively, you will probably work with several former flight nurses at Lackland. I never did flight nursing. I have done several jobs (ICU/ER/clinic etc) in the AF before going back to school (currently at USUHS working on my getting MSN/CRNA). As far as I know the AF doesn't have specific slots for DNPs there are a few slots for doctorate prepared nurses in the AF. It usually has to do with research so if you like nursing research this might be something for you, but keep in mind research is geared more towards PhDs not DNPs.

You don't need ICU to get into flight nursing....flight nursing is (for lack of better words) med-surg in the sky. You need ICU experience for CCATT nursing.

There are competitive one year critical care/ICU-ER internships at Wilford Hall, if you come in the AF w/o ICU experience you pretty much have to go through the internship to get into ICU. Wilford Hall maybe the exception though if there are more openings than people to fill them in ICU they might be willing to train an eager nurse....

Good luck to you!

Congrats to you on getting Lackland! I am and AF hopeful and did some of my MSN clinicals with a Maj there. Loved it--it's what inspired me to join the AF. You'll love San Antonio too. I've lived in Texas for almost 9 years and you can't beat the "winters" here. Good luck to you!

Im stationed here at lackland in the ER. I went through COT in august. Definitely lots of education opportunities here, always some class or training that is being offered.

Congrats! I found out today that i'll be headed there in May 06, 2008 :) I'm excited. Need to find a place to live I guess. The choice is to be on or off base.... hmmmm

Here is some links for you guys that might make the transition a little easier.

As far as base housing goes I think it is fairly limited/long waiting lists and extremely old. You should be assigned a sponsor usually before you go to COT and they should send you a welcome package with lots of useful (and some not so useful info...lol) information in it.

Good Luck to everyone!

Previously??

Oh yes. :chuckle

But that may be irrelevant now, since that was 38 yrs. ago..... :rotfl:

OMG... has it REALLY been that long ago??? :uhoh21: :rotfl:

So I would say thing just might have changed.. a tad. :D

But yes.. "boot camp" (Basic Trng.) at Lackland, then med tech school at Shepard AFB... many moons ago. Loved every bit of it.. still to this day I have dreams of being back in the good ol' USAF, doing "flight medic" in those C-130s.......

Wish you the very best, my Friend, from an "aging USAF vet". ;)

was it hard to get into the ER rather than work on a general med/surg type of floor? Are you living on or off base? Did you go through the NTP? If so where, did you go and what was it like? (Hours/day, Shifts/week, time away from base, what did you do, etc.) I'd love to here more about any experiences that you have had there, etc.
