Headaches

Published

The bane of the school nurses' existence. Had the dreaded contagious headache this afternoon with the preemptive "my teacher says we have drank a lot of water". Well played. I proceeded to find out they just started and it is exceptionally warm outside. I am blessed that I have a fairly wide berth where suck it up buttercup comes into play. Why do these kids think it is never going to be uncomfortable in this life?

YES!!! I say this to students all the time as well. After they answer no to have you seen a doctor for this diagnosis, I always say "So, you have a headache and not a migraine then." just to help reframe their thinking.

I do this all the time as well! Migraine is a serious thing that is terrible and no, you don't have one right now. You have a headache, kid.

Also kids don't hydrate. Or eat decently. Or even at all - at least during the school day. Also that "coffee drink" they had in the AM (that I can't even all coffee because no coffee was actually in it) - full of sugar and yes, it too may have caused your headache...

My middle school kids bypass the headache complaint and go straight to "migraine". Has a doctor diagnosed your migraine? NO? Then it is not a migraine. Most kids just thought they were really bad headaches. Don't joke with THAT!

I have spoken of my "migraine" student before, coming in smiling and talking to people on the way to my office. His parents push the point and every other day email us that they be called if he comes in, first words out of his mouth "can you call my mom?" knowing he will be picked up. His grades are hurting and he is rarely here. Has he had a neurology w/u in the last year? Of course not, mom knows best. Rich parents, poor kids.

I have a migraine student, no meds with me, have not seen this student this year. Came to school 2.5 days in January. Student has 504. Wants to go to a Vangaurd HS - not with these absences.
