Hi Everyone,
I'll be applying for HCC Spring 2012. I was intending on taking my prerequisites in the Fall, but I've decided to knock out A&P II and Micro this summer to avoid any complications in the application process. I'm getting conflicting reports that prereqs have to be complete BEFORE the application is due, then others say that I'm allowed 1 course in progress. Not sure, so just to be on the safe side I've opted to register for both courses over the summer.
I hope this thread will bring together all the Houston Community College Spring 2012 applicants.
Goodluck Everyone:D
@hufflebinks...I am in pharm now and you can't take it until you have been approved to take it. My suggestion would be get all of your core classes out of the way before you apply. You definitely need to have AP1 and 2 out of the way before you take the TEAS. The questions on the TEAS come from both and you need to have taken math 312 also before you take the TEAS. 312 is a requirement and it will help you in your pharm math. Pharm math itself isn't that hard but the class is very difficult, it is a lot of info to know and understand and is just a precursor to what nursing school is going to be like. At HCC if you have taken all of your core classes and you have been approved to take pharm and you pass the pharm math test with a 90% or better and you pass the class with a 75% or better you are in the program.Have you gone to an info session(which is mandatory)? They explain it but you will still leave confused!
Let me know if this was helpful if not I can try and answer all questions you have. For the last 2 years I have read and asked and re-read everything to make sure I know what is going on!
It is a crazy process but well worth it:uhoh3:
Thanks for responding! I need all the direction I can get...I feel so lost and in the dark right now. I've done everything they require except AP1 and I had to retake intro to psychology because I took it so long ago. I am taking AP2 spring 2012. Was gonna try and get into pharm for the spring semester too? Yep, I went to an ER meeting this last summer even though it was pretty early for me to attend. I just wanted to gather information and try to figure out exactly what I need to do. They told me I could finish my prereqs this fall and take pharm in the spring. It's been months since I contacted anyone in the department though so I feel like I'm just wandering on this path without really knowing where to go. I am getting all my vaccinations, just one more of HepB to go, and I need a flu shot but they weren't giving them out at the county place I went to a couple months ago. It was too early in the season. I also need the Meningicoccal vaccination. I got my titer for TB, but not for varicella. and I'm not sure about Tdap, MMR is also up to date....so I just want to make sure I get all the right things done and do everything in the right order. I guess I better try and get into that math 312 class as soon as possible. I wonder if I could do it over winter break....I'll have to check and see. I know I can do well in math, but it's just been so long since I've been in a class for it.
How do I get invited or approved or whatever to take pharm?
Thanks again for all your help!! I really appreciate it.
Sounds like you have got most of it done...you have to have math 312 before you apply, that is a pre-req. You also have to take the TEAS BEFORE you apply, they count that in the process. I am sure they have a math 312 for the mini semester but you need to check ASAP because they fill up fast. Once you have AP 1 and 2 the into to psy and the TEAS you will be in a good position to apply.
I know how crazy and out of sorts you feel, I was that way a year ago. I am also a mother of 3 young girls and have been out of school for 20 years...I KNOW how you feel and I am more than willing to help you out in any way I can.
You can do this and it does take some time but keep your chin up. It sounds like you are a good student so just keep with it...trying to get into nursing school is a crazy and tedious process but you can do it!!!!!!!!!
Thank you SO MUCH for all the information....I don't know if you saw this question, but how do I get an invitation to take Pharm?
You have to complete most if not all of your core classes and apply to the program and then they will send you a letter about 2 weeks after the application deadline has passed saying you are approved to take pharm. Almost everyone in my pharm class is completely finished with all pre-reqs and core classes so I think you only get invited to take the pharm class if you have all your other stuff completed or really close to being completed.
So complete all the following steps and you should get into a pharm class.......
1. Application for Health Sciences Program at http://coleman.hccs.edu/coleman/admission-information.
2. Completion of or tested out of MATH 0312 - Intermediate Algebra.
3. TOEFL (IBT) for all applicants educated in non-English speaking countries as specified by ADN counselor or Department Chair.
4. Proof of Essential Requirement session attendance (only official card from the session is acceptable).
5. Completion of the following prerequisites:
* BIOL 1406 - General Biology (highly recommended)
* BIOL 2401 - Anatomy & Physiology I **
* ENGL 1301 - Composition I
* PSYC 2301 - Introduction to Psychology
6. RNSG 1301 - Pharmacology (must be completed within 2 years prior to admission to the program). Student will be contacted if selected to enroll in this class at Coleman. Must meet HESI exam requirements.
7. ADN Faculty strongly suggests completion of the following courses prior to admission: ENGL 1302, SPCH X3XX, BIOL 2402**, BIOL 2420**, PSYC 2314**, Humanities/Fine Arts Elective.
** Must be completed within 5 years prior to admission to the program
I'm currently on the HCC page looking for math 0312 but all I'm finding is spring 2012....am I out of luck? I was gonna take AP2, pharm and anything else necessary this spring, but if I have to have math before I apply, is this a problem?[/quoteYes you have to have math 312 before you apply. Also April 1st is the deadline for entrance into the Fall 2012 class so you will probable need to look to catch the next application period which ends August 1st for entrance into the program in the Spring of 2013. You should have everything done by then, and then hopefully they will approve you to take pharm and you can take that in Fall 2012.
Am I just confusing you more:uhoh3: I accepted your FR but don't know if I did it right:lol2:
so sorry for the delay in responding!!! the weekend was crazy busy and then i was studying a and p for what seems like forever....I'm a little disappointed to hear I may have to push everything back by a semester, but a semester isn't that long, right? It could be a good thing...On a side note, I did take College Algebra at Wharton years ago but got a D....would they consider that? Imean, i would rather take it over again just to have it fresh in my mind, but if it means I could get accepted to take pharm, then I could take it in the spring....I am willing to jump through hoops to get this done, I just need to know where they are! hehehe....I will go check my friends to see if you're there....going to pick kids up from school right now! talk to you soon. thanks.
Hey everyone!!
Have any of you taken any of the chapter tests yet?? How was it?? I'm taking a test over Ch. 1-29 on Monday (ANS), and after speaking with some of the other students in the class (which are in their second round), I'm kinda nervous. Not sure what to expect. They are saying class average for the first test last summer semester was 72%, which is really low! Freaking out!
