HCC Hillsborough Community College Roll-Call

U.S.A. Florida

Hey there! I'd just like to see who on allnurses.com is in the Tampa or Plant City HCC RN Program, either current, just accepted, or graduated...

I'm starting this August as a new student, and hopefully this thread would be a great place for us to network with other HCC students online!

Thank you compassionate1!

Just FYI, for your friend who already has her LPN.

Transition option. Individuals who are LPNs or Paramedics are eligible to enroll in an accelerated program leading to an associate's degree in nursing and subsequently be in a position to take the licensing examination. There is also a military medic option designed for members of the armed forces of the United States who are also licensed

LPNs. The program is designed to assist these professionals pursuit of a degree (ADN). This program is offered once a year on the Dale Mabry campus.

compassionate1 is exactly right with all the pre-req and then the additional classes you'll need during; however, I have never been told anything regarding an entrance exam. Am I missing something here?

Thanks once again for the info. It was helpful to know when clinicals would start, how lab worked, and all the info on the books.

Although the schedule is available for viewing online, we were told not to register for our classes until after that. Is that the time you are referring to registering? Right after orientation?

BTW, how picky were they about the no trim color in the shoes. I know they have to be leather with no mesh, but what if they are shox with a tad of light gray on the swoosh? Are they that picky?

And I know this may be a sticky topic...how are they on nose piercing? It's a tiny tiny stud. Did any one in your class have to deal with this? I know only one pair of stud earrings and such but was wondering if I could just get a clear ring for my nose or if it will have to come out completely. Personally, I know it body jewelry is frowned upon, but I honestly believe it doesn't affect my care I would provide as a nurse. JMHO.

Wow, you go! You are busy! :bow:It's nice to see someone so busy is making it. Let's me know it is achievable. I hope I wasn't prying. Good luck and thanks again.

CariLiz: I had to take the college enterance test at HCC because I had never been to college.

Thanks for the clarification! :wink2:

College entrance exam but not a nursing entrance exam. I misunderstood.

Now, is the college entrance exam the same as your placement tests? If so, you can take this more than the one time.

Cari

Yes it is the same. I didn't realize you could take it more than once, that's good to know. Thanks

Cari:

They will tell you at orientation the day and time you can register. You need to be logged in and ready to register for the class you want at the exact moment they tell you the class will be open for registration. This is specific to Nursing and the NP1 class. They have it listed now as closed, but they will flip the switch at whatever time they tell you and everyone rushes on-line to register for the class they want (mornings or afternoons).

They are not too picky about the shoes. You should be fine with the ones you mentioned. The want all-white shoes or as close to all-white as you can get.

For the nose ring, they repeated several times that anything but a small stud (no hoops or dangles) in the ears is unacceptable. No visible tattoos and no other visible body piercings, including nose rings, tongue, etc. You are right that it won't stop you from being a great nurse, but "them are the rules" for the school at least.

Best of luck!

Hey all,

I am in the Nur program at HCC. If you are look for specific information you can email me at [email protected]. I was supposed to be speaking at the orientation in a couple of weeks but I haven't decided. I will be added as a TA to the classes when they open but we all know that will be several weeks from now. If you want to get a head start let me know. I'll tell you everything I WISH someone would have told me!

Peace

Hi,

I will start the program from fall 2008, dale mabry campus (afternoons). Does anyone know if we will use all the books from the list they gave us? Did anyone try to buy them online? Does it worth it? I used to buy all my books online in past, it it much more cheaper than in their bookstores. So, I was thinking if I can find nursing books online too. But all the books seem to result in the same price as their package.

The two main books you will use are the Perry and Potter package and the Lewis Med Surg book. All of the other books are optional, but you will need a nursing diagnosis book, drug book and other reference books, but you can use whichever ones you like best - you don't have to get the specific ones they list. It is hard to find the Perry and Potter package cheaper than the bookstore is offering, unless you find the books and CDs used. If you can get them used or if you can get the Lewis Med Surg book on-line you will save some money. You may or may not want the study guide that goes with the Lewis book, but it is not required. For the first couple of weeks you only need the Perry and Potter book. Then that will give you time to see what else you need after class starts.

Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the information. I have one more question about books. They offer the so-called e-books with different online supplement going together with books. Do the teachers use them? If it is just for a student convenience, I do not like to use e-books, I prefer traditional heavy books:)

Is this package of books just for the first semester?

sorry for the late reply as this was a old thread:) I never used the e-books supplement other that the free one that you can sign up by logging on to the site that comes with the book. Most of the other ones your teacher will have to give you a code before you can even register, so you cant just register on your own. In my experience we did not use them so I would not purchase anything until you are sure you have to use it. I wasted alot of money last semester on things that I did not really need

In my experience we didnt use them and I tried to buy some additional software and you needed this number from professor so, if they want you to have it then they will tell you the code. I would buy anything until I see i have a use for it. You will find yourself buying everything. I wasted alot of money of stuff I did not need last term. This time around I dont buy the books they say I need I buy what I want and study from it! :)

Sorry so long for the reply this was a old thread:)
