Hawaii Pacific University Nursing School

U.S.A. Hawaii

Published

I just wanted to take some time and give my opinion about attending nursing school at Hawaii Pacific University. I remember last year when I was considering attending HPU and I asked in this forum if anyone knew what the nursing school at HPU was like and did not get many responses. So I wanted to offer some information in case anyone is considering attending and also to make sure that the school is accountable in some way for the good and bad way in which it treats it's students.

First off, HPU does have some good things going for it. It's a small school, in a beautiful area, that is very international where you get exposure to many different cultures and people. Some of the professors that I have had have been amazing and inspiring. Some of my fellow students have been intelligent and wonderful, but most of the students are not what I would consider "stellar" or motivated people.

With that being said I have had many dissapointing and frustrating experiences with the University to the point where I just cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone. I am a mature, hard-working, adult student. When I was accepted at HPU I was told that I could start clinicals after one semester of finishing some prerequisites because they were transfering most of my prerequisites from the college I had attended prior to HPU. Unfortunately it took me three semesters and thousands of extra dollars because of the way their system works. The only way you get a spot in clinicals is by the number of credits you have from HPU. As a transfer student you are at a disctinct disadvantage. When i arrived at HPU to get into clinical you needed 15, after a semester it was 30, finally after taking 19-20credits spring semester I got in with 45. Had I known that it was going to take me three extra semesters to start clinicals I highly doubt I would have come to HPU, but they conveinently leave this information out when they send you your acceptance letter.

Dealing with the nursing school administration is like dealing with DMV on crack. The HPU Nursing Office has got to be the absolute most disorganized, ill-logical place on the planet. I really think a clincal study needs to be done on how an environment can foster such lack of organization and common sense. Nothing is ever really clear or well-planned out. Every semester you have to deal with some stupidity that threatens your chance at being in the program. Whether it's clinical health requirements that constantly get changed, lost, or whether it's the nursing curriculum where instead of thinking you'll be able to do a semester of clinicals in the summer in order to graduate the follwoing spring, but they decide out of the blue to not offer those clinicals this summer so you're stuck at the school even longer, it all is just too much to bear.

I've had friends endure horror stories that could make nursing students ears bleed. Whether it was my friends who mentioned to a nursing professor that you might want to aspirate the needle before giving the injection, and the instructor being so embaressed she tried to make his life miserable for the rest of the semester and tried to find grounds to ultimately fail him, or the time I got a letter saying that because I have so many credits I am now ineligable to receive any financial aid in the future (with two more years of clinicals to go at $10,080 a semester). The school knew how many credits I had when I transfered and how many credits I was going to need to graduate, why didn't they tell me this before I came?

I know every school has it's good and bad points and I think nursing schools are exceptionally prone to disorganization and frustrating moments. With that being said I think HPU really takes advantage of it's students, both their money and their sanity, and it's time that other people needed to know about it. The school feels like it can make thee demands because their are so many nursing students that want to attend but if people knew the truth this just wouldn't be the case. So my advice to anyone considering HPU is to think long and hard about your financial situation, about your sanity, and about if you want to go to a school that really doesn't have it together nor cares that when it's screwing you. I also really want to save anyone else from what I've had to go through with this school.

Wow - thanks for the advice. We live in Ventura County and she was admitted to Cal State University Channel Islands. They have a fairly new nursing program, but experiencing all the same issues as everything in Calif. She can't apply for the nursing program until after her first semester as a freshman. Thank you so much for your input. Will definately be considering it when we lay everything in front of us and make a decision.

One more little bit of advice. There's a little college up in Napa valley called Pacific Union College. It has a 2 year ADN or 4 year BSN nursing program. It has a great reputation, I know a number of people that graduated there that had a good experience, and it's not as competitive to get into as the Cal state schools because so few people know about it. I didn't go there because it was expensive and I just didn't have the money. But I urge you guys to check it out because it seemed like a really small, beautiful school, that had a pretty good program. Here's the website: http://www.puc.edu/academics/departments/nursing/home

Everything that jpeters84 said on this forum is RIGHT!! DO NOT GO TO HAWAII PACIFIC UNIVERSITY!! I have made a terrible decision too and wish I hadn't step foot in that university. They have changed the curriculum every semester and it's pulling a lot of us back. Someone on this board mentioned that most of the professors at HPU have power trips, that is true. If only I have found this forum sooner. I am now deeply depressed thinking my dream of becoming a nurse is impossible. It is true that you'll get a nice certificate that you got accepted to the nursing program, but in reality... it's BS. I just feel really bad for those who have spent so much time and money in that school. If your daughter comes here to hawaii to attend HPU that will be the biggest mistake.

I was just reading these postings about HPU and I felt that I had to add my opinion. I am a Level 5 student graduating in 3 weeks and I can honestly say that all bad comments are true. ATI's up until this semester had to be passed with a Level 2 or 3 to pass the concurring course. Example, if you fail the Med-Surg ATI three times, but have all A's in the lecture---YOU FAIL THAT COURSE!! What ridiculous BS!! They changed it this semester to where you don't have to pass the ATI's but if you do with a Level 2 or 3, you get EXTRA points added to your final grade for the course. While it is great for all the new nursing students, can you imagine the stress added to the students to pass that stupid test or not move up in the program? Btw, just graduating from HPU is gonna cost you even more $$$$. This is the greediest school ever. Just to graduate (regradless if you plan to walk) is $120. Cap & gown is another $40. If you want to participate in pinning thats another $50, plus the school will offer you THEIR pins from the nursing office, with the cheapest being another $40...don't do it, go online, the pins are as cheap as $3, but HPU will never tell you that cause they wanna milk you dry. I can sit here for days writing about the horror stories that my classmates and I have endured at HPU..but only people that are in the program would actually understand, otherwise, no one would believe me, cause the stories are that bad!!! Advice to anyone going for their nursing degree: Do not go to HPU, apply to UH, KCC, or even MCC. Seriously.

I do want to thank everyone for the information on HPU. I am so lucky I found this site. My daughter (thankfully) has decided against HPU and has enrolled at California State University Channel Islands. This is a new university and new nursing program, but has state of the art sim lab and class sizes of no more than 12/1 in nursing. The director was at Mt. Saint Mary's for 30 years. It is highly competitive, but she is going to try her very best and take her chances. Her friend; however, is visiting HPU next week. She is looking thru rose colored glasses - not willing to believe your reviews and believing what the university is telling her. Again, thank you so much and best of luck to each of you in your future careers. We are forever thankful!

Good luck to your daughter! I am sure she will do great. I'm glad I could be of help. Tha Cal state programs are excellent. She made a good choice.

I'm so glad I found this forum. I just got out of the military and I will be starting college this fall...I had attended a few courses at HPU's Military Campus Program, so I didn't need to apply, just needed to change my major. I read this forum a few months ago when I was researching schools. I read this thread and took it into consideration. The only person I've ever heard give a good review of the program is my friend who is a MCEP student (military program) so she doesn't count.

I DID go and change my major, and I spoke to an advisor. I was very close to just going with it...but I didn't. I'm just going to go pre-nursing at Kapiolani CC, and try getting into that program once all my pre-reqs are completed.

Everything I read here stuck in my mind, and I couldn't let myself go with what LOOKED like the easiest route...so I wanted to thank every single one of you that shared your experiences in HPU's nursing program, and that goes for posters in other threads here on this topic, too.

Konamomi-

I am so happy I was able to save someone from the hell that I have been in the past two years. Good luck to you. I hear KCC has an EXCELLENT program!

I went to HPU for one single solitary semester and ran for the hills. I wasn't even there for nursing... I was considering finance as a major. But I saw the writing on the wall and never looked back. Reading through this thread made me thank my lucky stars that I made the right decision.

Also I must warn you guys, because HPU's NCLEX pass rates are so low our accreditation may be in jeopardy. I don't know this for sure but I do know our pass rates and they are so low there is no way our accrediation is not being watched.

how can i find the NCLEX pass rates for HPU?

Thanks that was really helpful. I already hold a bachelors in a business degree but have been taking pre=requisites to get into nursing school. How many credits did HPU carry over? My husband is going to be stationed in Hawaii so I don't really have much choice in where I go to school =( It seems as if this is the only school in the area. In total, how long did it take you to finish your nursing degree? What was your average GPA to get accepted into the program?>

Specializes in icu.
Kelsie Bear,

I wish I could tell you it's been easy once I got into the program, but well, it hasn't. Because our NCLEX scores are so incredibly low to keep our accrediation the school has had to institue all of these changes such as ATI, TEAS testing, 10% of all exams are math for meds, academic warnings that get handed out like candy, skill check offs at every level. For the most part I think these are good things. It's just the way that HPU does them that are so aweful. They put undue pressure on us, do not communicate to us at all, and treat us like children. Plus you are threatened around every corner to get kicked out of the program, and I'm a good student I've maintained a 3.7 gpa. They've changed the curriculum on my level twice now adding two extra semesters at a ridiculous expense for us students. I couldn't be more frustrated or have more dislike for HPU. Personally, I think the administrators should be ashamed of themselves. The best you can do is get good instructors and work your heart out. The one saving grace is that there are a few good instructors at this school that make some of the B.S. worth it. WHO YOU TAKE FOR NURSING CLASSES MAKES OR BREAKS YOUR EXPERIENCE AT HPU SO CHOOSE WISELY!

And for the love of god do not wait to take math for meds or pharm with level one, you will regret it! Level one is hard enough...

Good luck to you. All I know to say is keep your head up and if things get really bad Chaminade is openning a nursing school this year and maybe you can transfer...Also many level one students are starting a class action lawsuit against the university for changing admission requirements without telling anyone. Maybe the school will snap into shape once it's sued. Food for thought...

Really! I know for sure that the nursing program is expensive and very disorganized. However, I find it hard to believe that HPU NCLEX pass rate is very low......Because I do remember that my graduating class had at least 90% pass rate (Dec 07)....and we had to do ATI's and 10% of questions in each class included math for meds....the only add on now is the TEAS testing....and trust me I live in chicago and it is mandatory that all schools in Il state have to test their students on TEAS before they are accepted into the program.....I mean I could see the school trying to make sure that student do much better on their NCLEX test, but I find it hard to believe that the scores are bad....All my friends that graduated from HPU passed NCLEX first time....and we were just average students....Anyway, I wish you all the best in whatever route you decide to go. Nursing school is cracy anywhere you go thats what I have found out...but if you don't give up you will be done in no time.....I work at the Resp ICU unit in chicago and I thank God for hanging in and graduating at HPU, despite all odds...:)
